Great for all those who need this. Heat

I guess most people that would be interested in this will be diabetic anyway, but for those that aren't if you answer no to the question "are you currently taking insulin?" when you fill in the form they will say sorry it is only available for those that are

Good find

Great, these are so expensive to buy and doctors are reluctant to give you a new one!

Heat!

Thank you!

Genuine thanks OP

Some people still don't know how to understand sarcasm...

Yes..and I would hope so. I mean, why request it if you dont need it? There will be people who do need it. Although I do suppose there will be some "anything for nothing" people would try to sign up anyway and deprive someone who could actually use it.

I don't think you have to be taking insulin to need to check your blood glucose. You can regulate it by diet and still need to check how high it goes after a meal

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, so as a human i am eligible.

They are probably a huge multinational, its not going to impact anyone if i sell a few of these down the market.

Got one fir ny hubby as he always misplaced his. Will have this one in the car when we eat out. They are horribly expensive to buy and the GP is reluctant to renew his actual one.

Not all diabetics take insulin, I for instance take metformin tablets but still have to check my sugar daily

Yes, wife in same position with the metformin tabs, so I applied for this just to get knock back because she's not on a machine testing twice a day.
You don't find out this criteria until filling in all your details of course.......info scam me thinks.

Thanks, ordered 4 to see what they are like.

Boyf was really happy with the AccuCheck Mobile he got over a year ago (thanks to HUKD). His blood sugar is all over the place with Type 1 and Addison's Disease, his hypos can be quite severe and frightening. Shame some people are making comments about selling them on!

Nice .. Order one for my mum x thanks

Only claim if you need:
Some info concerning insulin and diabetes - it can be used as treatment in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is associated with an absolute deficiency of insulin to due to autoimmune disease of the pancreas and is usually presenting earlier and life and more severe
Type 2 diabetes is due to insulin resistance (metformin increases insulin sensitivity). Insulin has a place, although limited compared to type 1 in the treatment of type 2 (T2DM)

I knew this would happen, it happened last time I posted one. I figure if it only helps one genuine person for every ten shysters that sell them on, its still worth it.

He's pleased that this monitor measures ketones, so it's much appreciated

Its a pity you couldnt put the link on ebay itself so more people can get them free instead of paying for them.

If you are diabetic then all items should be free on prescription as you can claim for a medical exemption certificate. Meters are offered free every now and again by companies, they make the money on the lancets and test strips so can afford to offer the machines free.

Thanks.

Whilst it won't really matter to them, if people abuse these offers then they will simply stop giving them away and genuine users will be forced to buy them.

Boyf gets his free, though he had a bit of bother getting strips* and lancets for his AccuChek. I would put that down to him living in a rural area and his GP being a bit of a nippy character, probably, though! Probably best to let your GP know about your new meter in good time, just in case.

*Woops, the AccuChek Mobile takes cassettes, rather than strips.

Incorrect.
All test strips are NOT available on the NHS for free. It depends on which machine you get so you will always need to ask that question of the doctor or pharmacy.

The accuchek machines are the best. Thats why the district nurse uses them You can also get the machines from free if you just ask them to send you one & the strips are also available on prescription.
I dont really class type 2 diabetics as real diabetics since the vast majority of them have the illness through poor diet & lack of control. The only real diabetics are type 1.

They will never stop giving these testers away for free......they will even replace the batteries free when they expire....They make the money from the test strips which cost upwards of £20 per pack...Thats why the NHS have started limiting the amount of test strips ordered by patients....They did that because of type 2 diabetics ordering thousands of them & abusing the system...No type 2 diabetic needs to test their blood sugar nore than once every few days.....Type 1 & any insulin controlled diabetic should test their blood sugars often as they are at risk of hypoglycemia....The majority of type 2 diabetics will never go hypo & are more likely to go hyperglycemic due to them being unable to change the ways that gave them diabetes in the first place.

You can get ketone urine test strips or tablets from the GP....Ketones are what will cause his kidneys to fail. If he starts showing protein in the urine aswell then the damage is already done. Thats a heads up from a person who has had a kidney & pancreas transplant through not sticking to a blood sugar lever between 5-7

why not give blood and they tell you if your ok when the test it

The way I understand it, 12 *hours* can be dangerous for a type 1 diabetic to be unaware of their levels.

Type 2 diabetes can be hereditary, and unfortunately sufferers can't change that
