Heat For Using Your Loaf

Might not be everywhere. Have had some charge, some give it free, seems to vary a lot.

So if I go and ask for yeast they will give me it for free? Me and my daughter love making our own bread But I might look cheeky asking for free yeast?

used to work at tesco was younger, in the bakery, it is free - loads of people used to ask for it!

free in my store. has been for ages

So how comes the 'General Population' are nonethewiser of this even existing in the first place? .. yet alone being then aware that its been around for donkeys also ..... thats a MAJOR 'boo boo' if you ask me?. :-(

Lol. :-)

Will try asking. Thanks OP.

Tesco should advertise this. But surprised they actually use this in bakery as eveything comes in frozen.

I thought all supermarkets done this? I done this all the time in asda. They just ask how much you want and they can't charge for it

Always free at Tesco

This is pretty awesome! I do occasionally make my own bread so it'll be handy. Thanks op, I had no idea.
Sounds like a stupid question... But why? This day in age it seems strange for a huge company to just give something away free! (Not that I'm complaining lol. Just curious)

Thanks, will probably ask at my local. have some heat from me.

We've been doing this for years but here have some heat.

Wish I had a Tesco nearby. Our Sainsburys charges 20p for 50g and 50p for 200g.

Not everything comes from frozen in a Tesco bakery. If it is a scratch bakery, what else would they use apart from yeast. You must be visiting stores that only have bake-off bakeries. Yeast is cheap and giving some away for free is classed as a customer service, been doing this in their stores for over 20 years.

now all you need is sugar and oranges for free and you can brew your own hooch ! (prison alchohol) .... not as bad as you might think either !

At my local Tesco (York Askham Bar) I just ask for fresh yeast at the in-store bakery and get a fair-sized chunk, they used to print out a label and charge 1p but now don't bother - sometimes the more junior staff on the checkouts don't know what it is...

Why would they give this away, yet charge for it in the bakery isle ?
Can't they keep it for the next batch of loaves they bake ?

Its probably just a plot to get you into the store to have something free and at the same time you buy other goods - just a long standing unadvertised marketing ploy.

yeh this is one of the oldest freebies i know of, one of the first i ever read about, must be at least 10 years old. not the yeast, that would be silly:D

I bake at Asda and we charge £1 for 100g ish

What about Sainsbury's - do they charge ?

My wife bakes bread so would be handy

Why can't they charge for it? Is there a law against it?

I worked in the sainsburys bakery when at uni, they charge 20p

I had a tour of Tesco bakery where they also gave you freebies goody bag.
It is not in all Tesco's, only the ones that actually mix own bread and not just bake. Plus was told that sometimes they might ask for a donation of 10p

Thats strange because i have been making fresh bread at my tesco store for the last 20 years.

I apologise in advance if this is a silly question but do you substitute the 7g packet yeast for 7g fresh yeast?

I never knew about this either, will have to go and see if my local Tesco participates in this.

Thanks OP!

I used to run the bakery in Tesco and it has always been free to any customer who asked. Even now that bakeries have switched over to part bake they still have fresh yeast on order so it can still be requested

Tesco Stretford (Manchester) told me they can't sell yeast. I think I caught the wrong guy.

you use half dried yeast to fresh as the water has been been removed so 7gms dried yeast is the same as 14gms fresh
