I'm going a bit Iceland mad at the moment with my soon to be Iceland wedding! So, here is a great deal touring Iceland in a campervan, pretty similar to my two week trip.

If you really want to explore Iceland, then a campervan is a great way to do it. Iceland accommodation is expensive, and most places are around £100 a night and you have to stick to an itinerary. For the best way of getting around you need a car anyway, so why not combine the two!

Here is a proposed itinerary:

Fly into Iceland on 1 June. The company you have booked your campervan with give you free Flybus transfer into the city so you don't need to worry about additional cost. Once you have your campervan, stock up on supplies at the local supermarket Bounts. Don't spend too long in the city as you'll be returning for a night before your flight home.

I'd then head straight to Thingvellir area, where you can see Geysir and Gullfoss. If you are wanting to save some money, I'd recommend the campingcard.is which entitles you to up to 28 nights camping on camp sites in Iceland in 41 different locations - valid for the whole of 2016 so you can pass it on again after use. You could save some costs here, campsites charge various amounts so do your research. For me, spending two weeks in Iceland meant it represented good value and they post for free to your home address. It is 110 Euro.

Suggested route from here is Selfoss, Selhalandsfoss (I'm marrying there) and Skogafoss. Other attractions on the black sand beaches of Vik and the glacier of Mydalsjokull as well as the glacier lakes. Whale watching is also an option on Hofn if you want to head to the North and depending on your route you could head East. Remember to include the Blue Lagoon on your return though, pre-booking your tickets in advance. If you don't want the expense of Blue Lagoon, my research into my own trip has found that EVERYWHERE in Iceland has swimming pools, some are literally just over £1 in the middle of nowhere so it is worth looking into other places if you want to save costs.

On 7th June you'll return to the city and return the motorhome. I've got to saying in the city in the Atlantic Rooms for a final night, which will allow some final exploration. The rental company will give you a Flybus ticket back to the airport which is included in the cost.

Some other tips:

- Look for local farmers markets to save cost on fresh fruit, vegetables, etc.

- Buy alcohol as you leave the airport duty free. Apparantly this is the cheapest way of buying alcohol.

- Get excess insurance for the motorhome, especially gravel and windsreen cover. You can do this with an insurance excess company rather than with the hire company.

- Get a good GPS app, HERE NOW maps suppose to work well and I've downloaded an offline version.

- Game of Thrones! Yes, lots of filming locations in Iceland you can visit, including the cave Grjótagjá where Jon Snow had hanky panky!

Breakdown

Flights from Bristol with WOW Air £99.80

Campervan 90090 ISK/£496.96 book via Skyscanner (the company is Camp Easy but it is cheaper to go via Skyscanner)

1 Night in Atlantic Rooms £77.83

Total £674.61/£337.31pp

Thank you!We initially looked at hotels or Airbnb etc but we were stuck to an itinerary then and not only were they expensive but then you had additional food costs too. We are hiring a motorhome so we are hoping we won't have to buy many meals out either so will save money. The camping card looks good value if you are planning to stay for around a week or longer as on average we found campsites were costing around 1000 ISK a night per person minimum, some more expensive. If anyone is going Iceland from mid June onwards and is planning to camp and wants a camping card but wants to save a bit on the 110 Euro cost I'll have one going spare with at least 14 nights on it spare.

I've never been but I'm so excited about visiting. The scenery looks stunning.

I assume when you say 337pp that they are paying us to go there? After all they still owe us 4billion pounds?
Why you would want to go and associate with the bunch of thieves is beyond me.

And ......all hope for this thread has ended
Tour Iceland in a campervan? I don't think it offers enough protection. It's a cold war and Katona could still be out there lurking behind the beef curtain amongst the prawn ring of spies.
Highly recommend the north - Go to Husavik for whale watching and myvatn nature baths instead of blue lagoon also round the corner is the Jon Snow cave ;-)

For a real hot tub experience head to Grettislaug - this is the place me and my wife fell so much in love with that we got married there in February. While best pool in the south is Seljvavellir.

Happy travels!

well done, most idiotic comment I have seen on here for many months, high praise indeed. And you even got a like. You should find that person and procreate, it would be the most amazing experiment in to the genepool and darwinian intervention.

All those places are on my itinerary! Myvatn is worth at least 3 days IMO. If it wasn't for everyone saying how much the Blue Lagoon is a 'must do' I think there looks to be far nicer and more remote places that are a fraction of the price!
No shower or loos in the van? Am I looking at the right one.
Thanks op great deal

You mean the most democratic country ever? They decided not to pay this debt, they decided to get rid of anyone who had anything to do with politics and only accept candidates for offices that have never been involved in Politics. Person can go bankrupt and start over, that's what they have done and just like a person Iceland have no chances for any international loans in foreseeable future, but that is what PEOPLE decided, not some government that "represented" them.
Did Iceland 18 months ago, some fantastic scenery, like the idea of doing it again in a camper van. Also the idea of getting married in Iceland appeals, just need to find the lucky lady.

Nope it's a campervan not a motorhome. The motorhome I am hiring with shower and toilet for two weeks has cost over £2k but it has all mod-cons, fridge, toaster etc, GPS, WiFi and all linen, cooking facilities etc. In a campervan you are reliant on public toilets or showers in the swimming pools (showers are mandatory).

would this be suitable for a wheelchair user?

I'm not sure, best to email the company and ask them. I would probably say your mean issue would be room in the campervan and the height for getting in and out but they have others available. I would check it out with the company though.
These vans are a bit basic and cheap.
Considering the open spaces and needs of a human you at least need a chemical loo on board.
