This is a great bargain trip to beat the January blues. You will fly to Faro and stay for a week in the Eirosol which is close to the strip in Albuferia. Whilst the temperatures aren't hot, you are likely to have better weather than the UK, and it's cheaper than a weekend break over here.

Book flights on ryanair.com 11-18 January £19.96

Book hotel on alpharooms.com £77.26

Finally book transfers on cabforce.com £19.77

If you want to go to portugal during the winter look at Lisbon or Porto.
Algarve is a city to visit purely in the summer due to being a high turístic area the cities focus their budget to summer times. While big central cities like Porto or Lisbon have constant things going on all year around

Algarve is not a city but a large area in the south of Portugal.
The weather is usually better than Lisbon & Porto and even in January it is still fairly busy with tourists and golfers, I've been a few times in Jan and February and the weather was great and lots of places were open unlike the tourist towns in Spain.

Hello Paula, I am portuguese. I know what algarve is. What i mean is, Algarve is more to beach, water parks and etc. While other cities are better to visit in the winter time because they have more going on.

I totally agree Tidus. I would far rather be in Porto wearing a coat, (a gem of a city), than that manicured scrubland down south. The real Portugal begins on a line between Monchique and Silves, and continues north to the Minho.
