Here is a lovely August school holiday break to Croatia (Pula). Departing from London Stansted on 23/08 and returning on 30/08. This is based on a family of 3 (two adults and 1 child).

I think Croatia would be a lovely break, good value and as I've included hire car you also have the opportunity to explore the Croatian countryside.

The apartment is the Duga Uvalva (named after the nearby cove of the same name) which has three beds and will comfortably accommodate a family. It is right on the coast and there is a beach nearby. There is also restaurants, shops and a small beach bar.

Breakdown

Flights are with Jet2 and included hand luggage only £358.20 jet2.com

Car hire is with Argus Car Hire via a company called Fleet. I've looked at reviews and ratings and these seem really good. I can find nothing in the terms and conditions about mandatory extras, but this price only includes basic cover and if you have an accident the excess is around £2500 so you may want to take out additional cover. £25.29 arguscarhire.com//?c=gb

Book apartment £212. City tax is extra on arrival at the apartment but I'm sure the figure on booking.com is incorrect as children do not pay city tax! booking.com

Total £595.49/£198.49pp

It would probably be a couple of hundred pounds cheaper not in holiday time (_;)

Is a car needed? Can't drive!

There are local buses for getting around. Car would be better. We did fly drive ... Dubrovnik split tragir and Zedar. All amazing. Coast is awesome. No sandy beaches though.

Love Croatia. Not been to Pula but it's a major tourist destination on the Istrian peninsula so probably quite busy but there's so much wonderful coast you won't need to go far for some quiet. I'd say a car is worthwhile to get around and find the nice swimming spots away from the towns though an estate car is overkill for three people with hand luggage. There are very few sandy beaches in croatia but this means that the water is very clear and many entry points into the water have steps built into the rocks so its like a big swimming pool. Can't wait to go back.

It all depends where you base yourself but if you don't drive you'd be better off in a town which has a beach. Most do. You could do some shore excursions to get out and about but I'd recommend getting on a boat if you can. You can get to most places on buses and ferrys.

Croatia airlines fly from Heathrow and Gatwick and are actually pretty cheap considering they include in flight refreshments and 23kg of hold luggage as standard. Around the same time you could fly to Rijeka for £160 return direct from Heathrow. From Rijeka head down to Cres and Losinj islands or go island hopping on the ferrys.
