Fujifilm FinePix XP80 £99.97 @ Curry's

Found 21st Apr 2016
Been waiting to get one of these for under £100 for weeks now. Gave up and literally JUST bought one on eBay for £80. Two minutes later, find out it went down at Currys yesterday!

From my research (and I've done a lot of it!) it's a pretty good holiday Camera.

Pretty much any high end amartph

Oops. Meant to say that pretty much any high end smartphone will take significantly better photos...and something like a Xiaomi Yi camera will perform significantly better in action environments. I can't really see the point in these cameras to be honest

Oh, that's a good one. Why didn't I think of that? Oh...I did - that's why I mentioned the Xiaomi Yi camera.

What's the point in owning a smartphone AND a very average jack of all trades digital camera? Just use the smartphone for normal photography - and then use something like the Xiaomi Yi for action stuff (you can then share the photos/videos back to the smartphone for sharing etc).

These Fuji cameras are a jack of all trades....and a master of none.
these are great cameras for the money, photos are better than on your average smart phone.

Doesn't look to be the case at all;

Average photos, and average videos.
if i could figure how to upload a couple of photos i would
Anyway it's a deal for a camera, HEAT, I'm not in the least bit interested in how good a smartphone for taking pics

So how do you take decent photos underwater with a Xiaomi Yi. It doesn't have a screen/viewfinder.

I have a waterproof camera similar to this, it's used when snorkelling and canoeing to take pictures. If I want a video I'd use a GoPro (or similar), if I wanted pics on a night out I'd use my phone.

So how much is your high end smartphone? A lot more than 99 pounds I imagine. Maybe you could upload photos from your XP80 to show everyone how rubbish it is?

I was initially interested in this camera. But I read the reviews, looked at the sample images and videos, and figured it was no better than the rest of the cameras in this class.

The reason for me chiming in is because I reckon this is one of those things that people think they'll make use of. But mediocre images and video will relegate it to a once in a blue moon gadget. Smartphones are tough, and action cams like Xiaomi Yi cameras with LCD backpacks are better at being outdoors cameras.

So, you're on the beach with your family and you get together for a nice photo for the Mantelpiece back home. Is the kind of photo that comes out of an Action Cam (especially the Xiaomi Yi) the kind of photo you want to frame??!? With that Fish-Eye/Super-wide view?!? And would you really want to take your iPhone 6S snorkelling or diving?

I have a DJI Phantom 3, a Canon 70D, an iPhone 6S and I'm not getting any of them wet! I also have a GoPro Hero4 Silver and it's great for action videos, rubbish for printable photos. £80 (or £100) for a camera you can drop, get wet on the beach and not have to worry about sand is a no-brainer

I do but according to statistics very many people don't.
Not that smartphones have a 5x optical zoom which smartphone numpties seem to not to grasp is a big feature for a camera.
Seem people are so in love with their smartphone it's as if they have a wife that is as thick as a brick but they claim she is a genius.

I have said all that I have done with my usage of a Lumia 1020 in mind. I have taken that cycle touring, where it has sat inside my waterproof jacket, getting drizzled with perspiration and rainwater. I have used it on a load of beaches....and taken it kayaking in Portugal using a simple dive bag with a lens housing built in. I've snorkelled with it, and dived down a few metres with it. The photos I have got with it have been better than any of the point and shoots we used to use (Ixus and the like).
The cameras in modern smartphones are faster than the 1020, have higher resolution video recording, and are cheaper. We all have smartphones...so I just personally don't see the need for these jack of all trades action cameras.

Anyway, I shall leave you all to discuss the merits (or otherwise) of these cameras.

'According to statistics, very many people don't (own a smartphone)'.

Good story - but not true.

My very brief search suggests smartphone ownership had already exceeded 70% of all mobiles out there as of February last year...

Case dismissed, take the guilty party down to the cells and detain them indefinitely.

what was the percentage with a decent camera?
i am fairly sure my 1st gen moto g (which is a smartphone iirc) would just narrowly miss out on having a good camera...

Difficult to assess the actual numbers out there. However, according to Apple, 20% of iPhone owners are now using either a 6 or 6S. iOS has ~40% marketshare...

More to the point, those that care about the photos they take will almost certainly have factored that in when buying their phone (after all, it is the ONLY camera that is always with you).

Yes, if you are really going to make use of the tough camera attributes of this camera, then it is a fair buy. But for everyone else (/most people), the camera that is with you is better than the one that isn't. So make use of your smartphones - because this camera will just end up unusued, in a draw.

Your logic is bizarre - surely if you are buying a waterproof / tough camera you are buying it for those features - why would "most people" buy this camera if they weren't interested in it's features?
Check out the sample videos on Youtube. The optical image stabilisation on the Fuji XP80 is rock solid - much better than a £600 smart phone! lol.

youtube.com/wat…2T8

If I had a £600 smartphone, I wouldn't take it on the Benedorm Aquapark Espiral ride, infact, I wouldn't take it anywhere... A high end smart phone is so expensive, I would keep it locked in a glass cabinet at all times!

Meanwhile with the Fuji XP80...

XP80 having fun on the Aqualand Torremolinos Crazy Cones slide:

At £99 the Fuji XP80 is a camera you can afford to have fun with, unlike a £600 top-of-the-range smart phone which is a precious Faberge egg that must be kept locked in it's Fort Knox glass cabinet at all times!
