Why would anyone buy these when smartphoned have more than capable cameras?

Dunno - they want a better camera maybe?

Totally agree - and don't forget the inter-connecting flange bracket on a double fixed zoom is not compatible with a gurble-hex sensor without at least 20nano-nano bytes of cache. You talk my kinda talk.

Dynamic range

Dynamic range

Is that the zoom? This camera is fixed range.
I have this camera and it’s the bees knees. It’s amazing for travel and shoots waaay better photos than any smart phone camera, just look up some samples.
If you’re serious about street and travel photography, you’ll likely already know about this camera anyway.

I paid £750 new as a grey import last year but I got lucky

No - Dynamic Range has nothing whatsoever to do with "zoom". And I think you mean it has a fixed length (lens). However, it has a Rangefinder type body.

mostly Sensor and lens makes the difference. This is a big sensor camera approx 10x bigger sensor than an iPhone sensor. If you remember the old film cameras it's like the difference between a 35mm and an old Kodak disk camera. Quality and resolution (and I don't mean pixels) make a massive difference.

If someone wants to jump to a new camera system....for a beginner.... Is Fuji better than Olympus ? For street and portraits..... General use.
I have a Sony a6000 with 3 lens.....but want to migrate... Mainly coz Sony lens are expensive

My phone has optical zoom (P20 Pro) not sure if others have.
Really, really, really, nice camera. I borrowed one for a couple of days, didn't want to give it back. I love the range finder style for street photography, and being discrete when doing candid shots. I think if you are happy with a fixed lens this is a great option, although you can get the X-E3 body, and a 23mm lens for not much more, opening up more possibilities if you find that the fixed lens isn't offering you what you expected.

As for the phone camera comment, I'd rather spend £750 on a camera, and £250 on something like a OnePlus 5T, than an iPhone XS or Pixel 3, I certainly know which one will limit me more in pursuit of great pictures. GO try take a nice long exposure shot with your smart phone, see how far you get.
Great price!

I had one a while back and loved the thing, way more than my Nikon D800 actually.

Fujifilm are unlike any other camera in the way it represents colours, for that reason aloan they are a good choice. But the will be features spacific to your needs that might mean you buy another brand. Best thing to do is decide how you are going to use the camera, does the size matter, does the weight or even shape matter, do you really need wifi, does it have to do great video or even do you really need a touch screen veiwer that swizzles around for salfie pics. As for expensive lenses, yes they are but I use vintage lenses with an adaptor but then I don't use auto setting.

I think you mean it has dynamic zoom but not phyical zoom. Mean what you are seeing is just the pixals blown up not the sceen magified via glass.

To be honest, if you don't know the difference between dynamic range and zoom range, you're probably not qualified to advise whether people should buy a camera or not...

Having purchased 2 refurbs from Fuji before I'm convinced they just rebox returns and send them out. Both of them had faults meaning I had to return for refund.

Definitely go Fuji. Get your hands on the XT100 or even this product, great entry level snappers. Your local independent camera store or Jessops will probably even let you try before you buy

Aren't Fuji lenses really erm.. expensive?

I hear that micro 4/3 Olympus cameras have loads of affordable lenses, but is stick with the a6000 if I was you. Sony is bossing it right now.
