I know I'll get cold votes again because it's big but think of this as compact tablet with phone functions. Cheapest I can find at the moment so a good deal for those who like this kind of device.

Specification:
CPU / GPU: Dual-core 1.7 GHz Krait / Adreno 305
Screen: 720 x 1280 pixels, 6.3 inches (~233 ppi pixel density)
Dimensions / Weight: 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm / 199g
RAM / Storage: 1.5GB / 8GB
Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, IR Blaster, 3G/LTE, Wifi ac
Camera: 8MP rear / 1.9MP front
Battery: Li-Ion 3200 mAh removeable

Why would someone want a Galaxy Mega?

* It is cheaper in price with most of the S4's tricks (remote function, gestures, camera features, etc)
* Some people don't like AMOLED due to past issues (burn in, black crush, lifespan is shorter than regular LCD)
* The Galaxy Mega's battery lasts longer as it is much higher capacity
* Smoother than the Note 2 in actual use and beats it in some benchmarks if you're into that
* The biggest possible screen you can put in your (regular sized) pocket
* Some people are okay with 233 ppi density screen as it is higher than the Nexus 7's 216 ppi and the Ipad mini's 163 ppi
* Getting a Mega would be cheaper than getting a separate Samsung smartphone and Samsung tablet with decent specs
* Some people think its overkill to have 1080p screen and 13MP camera as it just uses more memory with little to no noticeable improvement

Shame it's from e-cell though, maybe Amazon is a safer investment.

Yeah, I posted the eCell one and it's not accepted in HUKD maybe bacause of complaints. I have the black one which I personally like because it looks more compact. I also have accessories for it (extra batteries, car mount, video out cable):

I use it as a tablet so the size is just fine. Here's a size comparison chart:

http://i.imgur.com/587SYsl.jpg

Rubbish price for what it is. Full HD 1080p phones with quad core MTK6589T. 1 or 2 GB Ram. 13mp camera with 5mp front camera. Your choice of 5-7 inch screens. 2800-3800 mAh batteries. Same features as the Galaxy S4 with gravity sensor, eye scrolling etc...all these features and specs can be had for way under £200 if you'd be willing to give one of the lesser known far east brands a go. Brands like Umi, Goophone, Zopo, iOcean, THL, Jiayu etc. I purchased an Umi X2 with the MTK689T chip recently for £160 recently from Antelife. Probably the best bang for buck phone available and the build quality is just amazing. The only problem with shopping for far east products is the custom charges/duty/tax you might have to face. I had to pay £11 on the door to DHL. So £171 total. Not bad for what the phone is capable of.

What you don't get with Chinese phones under less known brands:

* UK warranty
* Updates and developer support
* Resale value is much lower
* Accessories
* Mediatek quad core processors used in Chinese phones perform slower than dual core Snapdragon processors
* Screen quality varies as the type of screen can be more important than just resolution
* Camera quality can also be a hit and miss with chinese phones
* Other issues with hardware like GPS connection problems, buttons not working after a while, etc.

I know it's good for some people but it's not for everyone.

Yep I'm with you on that one as it's not for everyone because for those who want peace of mind they'd rather shop here knowing that if something goes wrong then they could just walk into the shop they bought it from or send it back to the manufacturer. Still at a third of the price or even half of the price it's not that big a risk to take for those brave enough. Heck even I'd rather buy a phone in the UK from a UK supplier/retailer but one of the main reasons I don't is because of what you get for your money hardware wise. You're wrong about developer support. They have big communities on XDA and for some of the more popular ones even on Modaco. Updates? Update to what? The new version of Android OS Key Lime Pie or whatever? A lot of phones won't be getting that whereas the far east phones come with 4.2 vanilla with some like Umi already promising an OTA update to the new version of Android when it releases. Resale value...I agree with you on that. Poor resale values but remember you bought the phone for a third or half the price of it's Western counterpart. Accessories? Cases available. Hands free universally work. Car holders? Also universal ones available. There are many types of 1080p screens offer. MANY. So in reality all you have going for the Western counterparts are UK warranty and resale value. Nothing else. Unfortunately that is probably enough to make people want to pay the over inflated prices.

Like you said, it needs to be popular first to get any developer support unlike the big brands that get dedicated XDA forums even if it's just released. Accessories need to be imported like the phone. I agree that big brands are over inflated in prices but people still get them as they prefer not to gamble their money with Chinese imports.

Actually the Chinese imports are no cheaper if you go for a high end spec . Things like Gorilla glass even on a five inch screen, 2GB RAM, Snapdragon plus the Vat and it is more like 400 rather than 200 quid.

Yes if you want the Snapdragon processor but there's nothing wrong with the MTK6589 Turbo CPU. It's more than capable. I mean how much computing power do you need on a phone/phablet exactly? Most people wouldn't have a clue how to even make the most of a dual core CPU let alone quad. The MTK6589T performs excellently not to be confused with the slower clocked MTK6589 which also is a very good performer. The exact same specs as the Western counterparts minus the Snapdragon CPU is nowhere near 400. It's under £200 and if you don't mind poor batterly life you can even get 1080p 5" quad MTK6589T from iOcean for under £130. The only way it will reach £400 is if you opt for the lesser known high end far east brands like Oppo and the likes. Also I think you'd find the MTK6589T outperforms the CPU in this Galaxy Mega in synthetic benchmarks and I doubt you'd notice a difference in real life testing. Also I believe Goophone will be releasing a Galaxy Mega clone that has a 1080p screen that outperforms this Galaxy Mega at a fraction of the price.

My hubby got one from ecell & it's turned up fine I like it that much I sold my iPhone & pinched it of him lol
We bought the 8gb one. But I'm sure it's 16gb when I looked through the memory ect

Here we go...Goophone S4 Mega vs Samsung Galaxy Mega. Goophone...the most hilarious name for a phone lol. Still, they're putting out quality phones these days.

Yeah I have no doubt it's fine for you. If you're happy with it then that's all that matters. Personally, for a phone, I wouldn't want anything bigger than my Galaxy Note 2. In all honestly a 5" screen is probably the sweet spot for me.
Edited by: "chris2010uk" 11th Jul 2013

If it was 1080p it would be great as a portable tablet.

However the imminent Nexus 7 successor with a 1080p screen at probably a cheaper price makes it a difficult buy.

the term "mega-sized portability" is such a hypocritical statement. i like the product (and im an ios dev) and have voted hot as is a very good price

Heat for effort.

This is £374.99 on Expansys and in stock. I personally prefer shopping at Amazon but as it's from a third-party seller and not fulfilled by Amazon Expansys is the better deal I feel.

Realistically I think you'll have to spend £300 on the Goophone S4 Mega (£245 + shipping + taxes). For a saving of £86 you'll get:

* 1080p screen (doesn't say what type it is)
* Extra CPU & RAM (will probably be the same performance of the Galaxy Mega)
* 32GB internal storaage
* Dual SIM
* 13MP camera (type and quality unknown)

But wait, the're more!

* No LTE/4G support
* No video out via cable
* No wireless screen mirroring
* No universal remote function
* No USB OTG support
* No Features like Adapt Sound, S translator, Pop-up play, etc.
* No UK warranty
* No UK customer support
* No EU standards (or any) testing for safety
* No brand recognition - low resale value
* A straight out copy and probably infringed a lot of regulations and patents
* Accessories should be imported as well
* It's called Goophone S4 Mega

I'd definitely pay £300 for the Goophone Mega but the lack of UK warranty and UK retailers means there's a chance that I might waste all that money entirely which puts many people off.

You can already get similar sized phones with similar specs for under £200. There's also the Orient 6 which is a lot cheaper but only because it maintains the same specs and swaps out the 1080p from the Goophone version for a 720p screen. If you're paying over £220 quid for one of these new Goophone S4 Mega you've been had. The current Goophones with the same CPU+RAM spec with 720p screen are under £150. I had the i9 delivered for £166 altogether that's after all the unexpected charges.

I would be cautious of the origins of this handset from that seller

cdb

Exactly. Could easily be the Goophone S4 Mega or the Orient N6 rebadged.

Looked at one of these today in an o2 store and was impressed with how good the screen was. I'd been contemplating a Note II but then seeing this I wanted it. I read the reviews over a drink then went back and compared it to the Note II and I really couldn't see any inferiority of the screen/ppi issues. In fact I honestly thought the Note II wasn't as vibrant.

They are £439.99 on o2 refresh so this is a very good price, voted hot (although i'd want the 16gb version).

The screen is SC LCD which is brighter and has more accurate colours than AMOLED. It does not have AMOLED issues like short lifespan, yellowish/bluish whites, black crush, etc. 1080p is really just a marketing tag which really isn't as revolutionary as people would think like the 13MP cameras. Most people will only need 5MP resolution and screens over 200ppi has less and less real life advantage. They should really focus on better battery life and better quality cameras not just putting more numbers on specs to sell.

Unfortunately, the 16GB version is only available in Asia but if you root your Mega you won't have problems with storage.

I own a Note 2 which is the shiz! But looking at the specs of this, This is no upgrade, If anything, It is the entry level to a phablet Still nice to see big screens on phones as they definitely apeal to a large audience.

You may want to watch this Note 2 vs Mega 6.3 comparison: click here You'll see the Note 2 lag specially around 6:00. In actual everyday use, the Mega runs smoother.
Benchmark wise, the Note 2 only is better at Antutu and Vellamo but the Mega is better in almost all the others (Benchmark Pi, Linpack, Quadrant, Browser Mark, etc) source

It's not a huge leap over the Note 2 but performance wise I don't think it's a step back.

I wanted the biggest screen I can fit in my pocket and bring anywhere. I currently have a Nexus 7 and an Archos 80 Titanium and I hate it when it gets too heavy after a few hours when browsing in bed at night. I even hit my face hard when the tablet fell on my face as I fell asleep while holding it lying down. The Mega definitely ticks my boxes, the weight to screen ratio is a feat of engineering.

I'm sure the Spen will push the price up significantly. I had the original note and rarely used the Spen as I prefer typed memos and my drawings are horrible. If you like drawing with an Spen the Note 8.0 would be better for you or just wait for the Note 3.
