I have been thinking of getting one of these for a while now and with a saving of £51 over a brand new one I finally ordered.

They are refurbs from garmin and according to the reviews they are like new, just the box they come in are different

NOH - newly overhauled

Does the same as a £15-£25 jobby. What's the point!

I got a no name from hall fords for like £30 that does time, mph, distance etc, why on earth is this over a ton? What else can it do, is it a sat nav as well, not that that's needed on a push be?!

Well that depends what you're trying to record!

can this point out the way, e.g. with arrows etc, if I download a gpx file of a route? can it recalculate if I go off course?

Yes it is a sat nav -well it gives you directions if you upload a course. Which is very useful if you are doing a sportive or a course you haven't done before. It's also good if you want to download someone elses course from the webby.

Also, as it is a gps device it plots your route and a number of other stats which you can upload to the Garmin website to track your training, etc

You can also link it to a heart rate, cadence and power monitors - if that is your bag

I don't believe your £30 jobbie can do that can it?

Always best to do some research before blabbing off about something you know sweet FA about ...

Thats like saying a pencil can do the same as a computer in that they can both write letters.

This is a serious bit of cycling kit for those in training or wanting to train in a specific heart rate zone.

The Garmin 500 can show 5 different screens with up to 8 pieces of info on each. from the basics, It can show Avg spd, act spd, cadence, Heart rate, avg heart rate, Hr graphs, Hr zone. Mile rates. You can download a route and pace yourself against it. In fact it can show so much data that I have no idea what some of it means.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this to some one who wants to take cycling to the next level or perhaps training for their first sportives. Some of the functions require you to buy additional items like Hr monitor and cadence sensor.

It has a basic map function but if you want sat nav standard then the Garmin 800 may be better.

Never seen the point in these when you can get an android phone and a free app which does the same for a lot less

I've got an s3 and have been using edmondo and strava, as good as these are they don't come close to what a garmin can do
Also i wouldn't really want to strap my expensive smart phone to my handlebars

Especially in the wet too ...

And plus the fact that a standalone GPS like this is also far more accurate.

Can't believe some of the dumb comment above !

Just kidding fellas

Has it got a function to race yourself? e.g. if you do the same route again, so you can see if you are off the pace? etc?

How quick is it to bung stuff on strava with one of these? Easy? or a faff?

Yes you can race against yourself on it, not sure about strava

Utterly trivial. Just click the "Upload Activity" button on your strava webpage.

I've got one of these with the cadence and HRM sensors and its amazing - without those two add ones you're missing out on a fair bit of information but its still a class piece of kit. Hot at that price.;)
