820 does have extended display functionally and Fenix 5 is compatible.
Tempting but when I factor in the HR monitor and cadence sensor it gets very expensive. Think I will wait for a bundle deal but still heat for this good find !
I'd go for the 520 plus also on a deal. The touch screen on the 820 is laggy at best. 520 plus is a bit cheaper. The only tangible difference is that the 820 has a few more navigation functions none of which you can't do on the phone app and send to the device before you ride. The 820 is better on the fly if that's what you need. amazon.co.uk/Gar…8-3
I'm not much of a bicylist cycle man, so any reason I couldn't use an old smartphone instead of this and just put it in a waterproof case? Smartphones have a lot more apps and functions than this it appears. I used Strava and MapMyRide and I liked Strava as it worked properly whereas MapMyRide stopped working with the phone in my pocket.
I've always thought an old smartphone is a pretty good idea. Has the same battery life most likely and strava should work well as far as I'm concerned. Horses for courses?

You both asked similar questions so will reply together. Whilst you can use a phone you will find the battery gets depleted quickly when you have the gps/screen on. You will also need to make sure you get Bluetooth sensors to be able to pair to your phone.

People buy Garmin Edge devices due to the advanced data metrics & ability to configure. I have had an Edge 520 for a number of years & I have it set up to scroll through 3 different data screens. The first shows me 8 different metrics such as speed, average speed, HR, watts etc, the 2nd screen is the climb screen which shows me a gradient profile for the route I am following along with 2 metrics & the third is a map showing me the course I am following.

And you can also track things like your vo2 max, ftp, training load, recovery etc. On the newest “30” range there are even more metrics such as heat/altitude acclimation, training status etc. They are with the money if you are interested in training. If more casual use then just use a phone & Strava app.
As said before. Get the 520. Much better unit and you don’t have to deal with the crappy touchscreen.
Why is nobody mentioning the 530? I believe someone was selling it for just over £200 the other day. The 520 / 820 are end of cycle. Love my 530 (£195 with Vitality discount)
Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I’m on Holiday got my times mixed up and missed the sale !

I sort of referenced it, I love my Edge 520 (which is the go to choice of pretty much every non sponsored pro). But the 530 takes it to another level! Where did you see it for £200?! It appears to be full price everywhere still

I didn’t actually see it at that price myself, but a friend who paid full price for it told me he was gutted at seeing for £50 less last week, I’m starting to wonder if he really did see it.

Btw, the 820 has been about £30 cheaper than this in the past (Halfords I think) and once the 530 and 830 become more widely available I’d expect to be able to pick up an 820 for closer to £120

But surely you don't want to pick up an 820 if you have a 530?

No, I don't want an 820, just saying one might be able to get one at that price

That link isn't loading for me but I see Sigma are advertising it. Good deal, £210 for a 530 seems a much much better deal than £170 for an 820.
