The price is like any other overpriced commodity. If people want people pay but its still a great watch.

I like the yellow strap, this is a good price!
Unreal battery on this... had mine 3 weeks today & still got 28% left. Good price for this! The app is efficient & notifications work well.
Could anyone tell me a few of the benefits of this watch over a forerunner 235 for example? I'm an average runner and I'm not fussed at all about smartwatch features - I just want something which accurately track my runs and would allow me to do some interval training
Might also be worth trying Go outdoors to price match then less the 10% on this.
Also worth seeing the watch up close I have the Fenix 3 and love it but but the watch face is big as both watches the face is 51mm across. The fenix 5s is designed for smaller wrists at 42mm.

Fenix is aimed more at multi-sport/triathlon and endurance. See comment about battery life. If you ony run, ForeRunner is probably enough and you should save some cash. OTOH, I only run and I have a Fenix 3 and love it. Would happily get this if I could afford it.
I have a Fenix 3 HR Sapphire, not sure if it's worth the upgrade yet. But this is a great deal.

Probably not. The Fenix 3 HR has most of the functionality of this watch. You would also lose the benefit of the Sapphire lens
Ordered, thanks

It’s half as good.

For the 5 they thinned out the range so they all have HR now. But he would also lose WiFi with this though gain better optical HR monitoring (still poor), nicer size on the wrist and better screen resolution. The Sapphire 5 units have WiFi which is quite useful for more reliable upload vs Bluetooth - I wouldn’t do without it now.

Some of them come with two straps in the box, mine did anyway (black and this yellow one) but you can get quality ‘QuickFit’ compatible ones on eBay for £5 now, I have a red one and it’s held up well in many months and events use.

This is 47mm and a lot smaller than the 3. The 5X is the 51mm version that’s the same size as the 3 and it’s huge. I use the 5s as the smaller size is pretty good and I am clonking it on less stuff. It’ll also last an Ironman if I don’t hang about!

Its not worth upgrading yet. I had the 3hr and got a 5 at roughly this price. The tweaks are minor in relation to the price, you also lose the sapphire screen unless paying a lot more for the 5 sapphire or 5x. I returned it as I actually preferred the 3hr over it. I have however just got the 5x and its only the maps that makes it an upgrade. If you dont need the maps then dont bother. I would only recommend the 5 to those that don't already have the 3.

If you read my post properly, you will see that Gravesy166 has the Sapphire version of the Fenix 3 HR, hence my comment.

I didn’t see the Sapphire bit Gravesy posted. In that case probably not worth the change like you said then unless he wants better HR and will be losing Sapphire and WiFi (I didn’t want to lose WiFi). I’ll edit my comment.

I settled on the 5s Sapphire as it has all the 3 features wrapped up in a smaller case. The HR on the 3 isn’t as good but then anyone serious about monitoring HR isn’t going to rely on optical).

Stick with the 235 or look at the Vivoactive 3. The Fenix are good if you’ll use the all features and prefer the more ‘watch-like’ styling.

I believe that only sapphire edition comes with two straps.

BTW I love my fenix 5 for daily use and as a gym tracker etc . I would recommend getting a screen protector of eBay as this version is less scratch resistant then sapphire.

And also don’t forget about great customer support from Garmin which is located in Southampton UK .

I recently bought the black version for a couple of pound more and it only came with one strap, also the black strap version has red detailing on the buttons and face. I too would definitely recommend screen protectors, I bought a pair of Kimilar tempered glass ones from Amazon for about 5 pound and you wouldn't even know the watch had one on.

You’re probably right. It was a Sapphire 5 that came with both - but the replacement third-party on eBay are very good and I use one of those daily. They still have the QuickFit attachments. I don’t use a tempered glass on my 5S as the glass is nearly flush with the bezel edging, though I might get one soon rather than later.

I also looked at the Go Outdoors price match route but online they only do a bundle including a second strap so, technically, not the same product.

I have the 235 its decent but now looking at longer trail runs and although you can use DWMAPs I think the Fenix 5 has a better maps interface. 235 is amazingly plastic for the money, doesnt feel great quality and has a habit of not liking to sync with Garmin Connect. That said when working I like it, I would keep an eye on cex they get quite a few of the Garmin Fenix and 235s in and offer a decent saving. 235 does have smart features as well but I turn em off too many notifications etc! I still think the old lumps 305/310XT were better for general running - easier to use and better data screens just weighed a stone though!
Good price for this watch.

So many options with Garmin. If you're just running though, not a lot wrong with Forerunner 235. The more expensive garmins will just add extra features a lot wont use 95% of the time.

Then there's the Garmin Forerunner 735XT for £250. It does triathlons. I use it just for running currently.
amazon.co.uk/Gar…5xt

I was looking at the Fenix, but eventually chose the 735XT. There are some differences, most would find minor or irrelevant, but the 735XT was much cheaper - I picked it up for £234 in an black friday Amazon deal, but it's currently £250.
Read a couple of reports, don't know how true it was, that the metal Fenix 5 body might not help GPS reception, compared to plastic 735XT....dunno....

There's also the Garmin Fenix 5S (physically smaller), for £401 on amazon.

Anyone with experience skiing with some of the garmin watches? Looking at buying one for next year and not sure where to go just yet.
I had the Fenix 5S, my wife the 735XT. Neither one are great with pairing, they will connect and disconnect pretty much constantly. I then got the Fenix 5S Sapphire, it is a little better at staying connected but not by much, a friend of mine has made his way through the line of watches and claims the 935 is the first one he has had that stays paired. Garmin sent it to him as an exchange for the Fenix 5 he had, as they know of the problem.
I also struggle to get the software to show my activities, other than steps. And I can't get rid of the golf activity, so that shows who it is aimed at.
This is a decent price for this watch, if this is what you want. I had a Suunto Ambit Sport, and I wish I had not changed.

If you only want the basics you can go even cheaper and get the forerunner 35. My wife has one and it does everything she needs.

I have the Fenix 5 and was happy to pay £450 even though I knew it was possibly a bit overpriced. I like the style as an everyday watch to wear without looking too much like a sports watch, it has a really decent battery life so I can do things like ultra marathons. I also like the strength training option for when im in the gym. Its not perfect, but with a little editing I can keep track of my training and look back at my progress in the app.
Wow that's a lot of watch for a watch.
i dont think its a lot of watch for getting on for 200 quid more than my 920xt tbh

no handlebar quick release either

5S owner - absolutely incredible watch, changed my whole approach to fitness, love it.
Love my 935, same watch software, just a slightly different case.

I've had a Forerunner 25, Edge 500 & 520, Vivofit and Vivoactive 3.

This is far superior to them all.

The BT can be dependent on the smartphone, I use a 5S with a Galaxy Note 8 and it's never dropped the connection and was the same with a Note 4. I'm not sure why you're having issues showing activities or removing the golf activity as I haven't had problems with either of those.
