I was wondering about these vs smart watches nowadays

Depends in what you want. I went for the Pebble Time and then replaced it with the Garmin Vivoactive HR for a couple of reasons: battery life, smart notifications and smart unlock on my Android phone.
I get a week on my Garmin and did similar with the Pebble between charges. With the Garmin that's all day step tracking, heart rate and bluetooth connection to my phone. I don't mind pulling my phone out to reply to messages but the fact that my phone auto unlocks when paired to my watch is a real time saver.
Also get music control and better run dynamics.
I like the idea of smart watches but they are too limiting at the moment for me in terms of battery life. I don't want a phone on my wrist but horses for courses.
Optical heart rate monitors on all these devices are poor compared to the Garmin/Polar chest strap devices, the 235 is nice as you can use the Garmin chest straps as well as the optical sensor ... the Mio optical sensor is the best I've tried but still nothing like as accurate as the Garmin/polar chest straps.

The sleep tracking isn't great on the 230/235 plus it's not comfortable wearing these big watches during sleep.

I'll probably pick up one of these to replace my old trusty Garmin 410 which has been great but on its last legs and look for something smaller lighter and cheaper to handle sleep tracking (I had a Microsoft band which was really good at sleep tracking but which has fallen to bits after only a few months)
I have a 235, my regular run HR looks almost identical using the optical HR when compared to the chest strap to the point I've ditched the chest strap now. Had mine since they first came out and love it. I only paid £126 from Active+ on a Black Friday deal though.
Was £215 last week , went up in price last Thu I recall . I bought a 230 as not convinced the optical is worth the extra ( already have a chest strap from my Edge 810 )

What is Active+?

Currently at £215. Would be nice if it comes back to sub £200 again.

I agree, the elevate sensor on the 235 is really good, I use it for HR training and I've never had any issues with it. I previously had the 225 (Mio sensor) and that was much and such the same. I got mine from Blacks for £162 when they reduced it and also allowed you to use 30% off... Or something like that
