Loving mine. Not had it off since I got it a week or so ago. Very happy with the upgrade, great running watch. The music works great with Spotify.
Garmin sell this direct for £225 if you're a student.
38879391.jpgIs this better than the 735xt? Is the x45 new?
Edited by: "ookitnow" 1st Nov
The 735xt is a great watch but is now over 3 years old and, in garmins own words, "in the retirement home". It'll still work fine but won't receive any further software updates, which some might say isn't a bad thing! I wouldn't be paying that price for it though, I'd be aiming for @£150 tbh.
Have the vivoactive 3, very tempted by this. Anyone make the switch from the vivoactive 3 to this?

If you wait until Black Friday you will probably find a very good deal as there were last year. I personally would get a 2nd band 935 if I was getting a Tri watch (I have one).
Sorry, yes the 245 is new out this year. I think it shares the same Sony GPS chip as the 945 and fenix 6 series. I've got the 945 and the GPS isn't great but hopefully *should* improve with software updates, my 735xt was probably better.
Ok will wait for the new 45 series or go fenix 6 pro as that's around 500

Yes, the 245 is brilliant but doesn't have an altimeter if that is in anyway important to you. That said the vivoactive 4 which is around the same price as this has a larger screen and animated workouts like yoga and weight training which could be of use. If you are a runner and don't care about altitude etc then the 245 is all you need. If you are general fitness look at the vivoactive 4 which doesn't have as many in depth running analytics but as someone who just enjoys exercise for the sake of it this has never worried me. I reckon all you need is heart rate gps and music for running but that's me.

PS I reckon this will be 199 somewhere on black Friday.
Ok how about the 645? Is this thing old too?

The 645 is the generation before the 245 and does have an altimeter. It uses an older hr sensor and I think the older (and perhaps more accurate) gps chip. It does everything except triathlon but also doesn't get the latest features for running such as pace Pro which the 245 does.

Garmin is very clever at putting in some features in some watches and not in others. They have so many out at the moment it's unreal. If you let me know what you want in a garmin if be happy to help. I know more than is healthy having owned every garmin watch since 2017...

Thanks for that, I'd mostly be using it for running and day-to-day tracking, so it sounds like it'd be a worthy upgrade.

Interesting point about the GPS chip, as I'm finding it difficult to find an accurate one. Using strava to check what friends track and I'm yet to see anything as accurate as my bip, even the fenix 5s seems to cut more corners!

The default setting for gps is 'smart' recording on garmins and it has a 1 second option which should in theory be more accurate.

Not as high quality as in ear phones but I couldn't be without them now. I need music to run, but won't run near roads if I can't hear so these are a godsend.

I’m running my first marathon next year and want something for the training that links with Strava. Would you suggest this one? Thank you.
Yes very much so, it isn't cheap and there are alternatives.

Thanks. Is there anything you would recommend instead for this?
Polar ignite but no music if that is a clincher, can be found for 110. Garmin Vivoactive 3 music has music and can be found for around 130. It doesn't have as in depth metrics but all most people would need for a marathon. If you plan on serious training and have a coach then vo2 max is something that is measured on the garmin 245 and polar.

I’d like to tap your knowledge please. Does the lack of altimeter in the 245 mean the watch can’t track climbs/elevation gains properly?

Live it won't do a great job as I think it tries to use GPS data and therefore gets a bit behind itself and might need to be tethered to a phone. Once uploaded to garmin connect it will show the altitude correctly but if you are interested in knowing how far you've climbed just looking at your wrist mid activity you'll want something else. As a runner for enjoyment I am less worried about altitude, at the end of the day my eyes and legs can tell me how tough it could be and the data at the end tells the truth but I'm told if you're into trails and fells an altimeter is pretty invaluable.
