Cant comment on Facebook notifications as I have them switched off. However, Whatsapp messages come through, the Whatsapp logo is displayed with the name of the sender below, then the message beneath that. You can click on it to enlarge it, enabling you to read the entire message.
Have a look at the Vivoactive 3 music, it's a much newer and nicer watch, plus supports music (obvs). It was between the VA3 and VA4 so not much difference from the VA4 but a fair bit cheaper.

Ok thanks for that. Trying to find a suitable smart watch for my autistic neice. Doesn't need to have sports tracking,just needs to be clear for whatsapp, Facebook and texts that go to her.
You might be better just looking at smart watches then. Dedicated smart watches will probably do a better job to be honest.
Struggling to be honest. There's so many out there. Hoping someone will just say get watch "insert name"
All reviews seem to focus on activity tracking, rather than how it works for notifications from key apps.
What exactly do you need re. notifications? The VA3 and most other garmins will display all phone notifications (text but no contact images). Maybe something like an Apple or Samsung watch would display richer notifications. (edited)
I got one a couple of years back. Soooooooo wanted to like it, but found it to be really glitchy, would not pair with phone on a consistent basis for example. Persevered for a couple of weeks, but back for a refund it went!
The price drop on the new vivoactive is probably a year or two away as it's only just out.
4 days is good compared to an iwatch, plus it has an always on screen
Does it work for Facebook notifications and WhatsApp? If the person is in your contacts does it show their image on the watch? Thanks

Ideally needs to display the image. Ability to read the full message, not just part of it. Ideally with a few days battery. Doesn't need gps, heart monitor, 3g.
