Just been into my local Asda (York branch), they had quite a few of these reduced to £60.00, I asked the assistant but unfortunately he didn't know it it was a national deal or not.

It'll never be a top end camera but for sixty quid hopefully someone will find this useful?

Appears to be still full price on their website?

Shame he didnt know, as it be worth a visit to check these out. Are they any good, as i am unfamilar with this brand. What are these cameraational or not?s like? Anyway of knowing if its national or not? As my local is quite a distant from me, and i dont drive also.

plent reviews on the net, seems this is the going rate at asda

Original Poster

I've only taken a few snaps with the one I bought and then only viewed them on my tablet, but they seemed pretty good, the movie mode's a bit on the terrible side, but again good enough for the rare occasion I'd want to use it. On the whole there seems to be a lot of options to fiddle around with, face and smile recognition etc.. But being a complete idiot when it comes to camera's I think I'll leave it on auto, *grin*.

I did a search before posting, the cheapest I found it was three weeks ago which was posted at seventeen quid more, but if it is the usual price I send everyone my appologies...:D

i imagine a 2nd hand fuji would be better, but if you want new with warranty and are not too fussed if shots are great, then this should be an ok purchase

General Imaging isn't it? They're not that uncommon.

Damn you its a good deal and now im pondering should i get something that I will never use -.-

The brand os GE- General Electric- they supply all imagine stuff to the NHS including CT Scans, xray etc etc so cant be that bad!

I did a bit of research and these are pretty good cameras. A lot better than other cameras you will get at the same price. They are similar to the Fuji bridge cameras and you don't get much better quality images from the Fuji at a higher cost. Most people probably wouldn't notice the difference if you are viewing them at regular size on screen or printing them out in the common sizes.

Good spec for the price, not sure about the speed and reponsiveness at this price though.

They also manufacture Fridges! There venture capital arm GE Capital own a variety of businesses including leasing and finance. Not sure about them as a manufacturer of Cameras, worth looking at a Canon, Pentax or Nikon at similar prices.

G. E. is the U.S.A. conglomarate The General Electric Company. The brand is marketed under licence by the company General Imaging. Not sure of the actual manufacturing source but some models have featured on QVC. The cameras tend to be consdered a value for money brand with average reviews.

£107.99 on Amazon & 8 5 star reviews which all seem quite realistic, including someone who got it at this price from their Asda. After a bridge camera & was gonna go for a fuij, having 2nd thoughts now...

amazon.co.uk/pro…s=1 <<< Amazon price & reviews !

There is a discussion of this camera on dpreview which comments on it's external similarity to some of the Fuji bridge cameras (e.g. the S1000FD ). Performance seems to be quite reasonable, and potentially better than the Fuji in some areas. For £60 it is a genuine bargain IMO.

Good price, voted hot. Looks like it might be national, as one of the reviews on Amazon mentions that he bought his from Asda for £60 in Feb 2011. Looks rather like a Fuji bridge cam on the cheap, so probably not too bad, although sample pics I've seen look to have a slight blue cast, which seems to be a common trait with Fujis...

1: CT and x-ray are not cameras

and

2: my local NHS hospital has phillips gear, not GE. So they cannot be supplying all. It depends on the best deal the local trust can get.

Seriously........oO

An X-ray projects an image onto a negative.

Completely different technologies... Your eye is a videocamera, why don't Canon produce replacement eyes?

I was told by ASDA that these cameras were no longer being stocked and were on clearance at christmas. ASDA Direct at a much higher price, which would probably make a Fuji Direct refurb a better deal, with a current 15 % discount and free delivery !

So, a digital "camera" is a diferent technology to film.
By your standards that also is not a "camera".
Want to borrow a new shovell?

still £77 in my local (colchester) ... did ask for a price check

Why does there seem to be an argument about stupid things on nearly every deal? Is this a good price for this camera? That's what you should talking about.

Excellent price for what I consider to be a very decent starter bridge camera.I got this for Christmas, and must say that so far, I've been very pleased with the results, but you need to play with the settings to get the best from it, and I'm still learning!.I also liked the fact that this uses AA's, so I can have spare sets of rechargables ready to swap if need be.
If you want a good upgrade from a standard point & shoot, with a small zoom, then at this price, the GE-X5 is nothing short of a bargain, although some will not like the idea of the bridge camera size and weight. Heat added!

Looks like a good camera, hopefully its nationwide

Is this a good brand for cameras? I don't know.

But if someonekes out that this is good, based on a reason that is BS, I'll highlight it (but I'm not going to explain x ray production and image receptors!). Don't purchase this on the understanding it's good enough for the NHS...

ffs he didn't say it was good enough for the NHS that's paraphrasing he implied that the company supply high tech imaging gear to the NHS which means they have an R+D dept and are at the least a reputable company with a lot of experience and government contracts not some rubbish fly by nite outfit

HP make good laptop, PCs, printers etc but their cameras were very poor so no guarantee of quality.

But do they actually design / manufacture these cameras or just put their name on some cheap tat which is more likely the case.

HP printers (lasers use Canon Engines) GE made the reactors in that failed in Japan. This camera is made by a small company and branded by GE. Like Nike who don't make trainers (they use OEMs) and Pepsi who don't make fizzy drinks (they licence to bottlers except in Greece) and Sony don't make PS3 (they OEM e.g. Asus) Apple OEM iPads to Foxcon

This sound like a good Camera for the price. Heat added.
Post a link to FlickR if folks have shots taken this this?

I've been very impressed actually, especially considering the size of the LCD, and duration of power zoom. You can also switch the LCD off, and use the EVF which can be useful in certain situations (I still find it more natural for taking pictures too be honest), and this obviously helps conserve power.I got some of the 7dayshop 'Ready 2 Go' batteries, which work well for their price, although there are better ones available.Ultimately, how long your batteries will last is impossible to say, as it depends on how you use it, eg lots of flash, zoom adjustment etc. BTW it takes 4 x AA's
I'm no David Bailey, but I do like to take a lot of pics, and was very pleased having got this for £100, so if you manage to get one at this price, you most certainly won't be disappointed.

hp made the worst cameras ever, even made Kodak look brilliant

They seem to have been reduced in some stores and not others, The 3 stores nearest me have them at £77 (Gravesend, Greenhithe and Dartford), though 2 weeks ago I saw them at £50 in the store in Newton Abbott
