Have the mods removed my comment about Gearbest and their couldn't care less approach to customer complaints already?

Be careful with ScamBest, especially with discount codes. They conned me last week by removing the discount when transferring the payment to Paypal for processing and switching the currency from UK pounds to US dollars making it harder to spot. They waited until after dispatch to reply to my complaint and now won't refund the overcharge. Their customer service, if you can call it that, is basically couldn't care less. Avoid Gearbest.

Most of these kinds of boxes will play X264/X265 files from a stick just fine, within any limitations of the SOC itself.

However, other factors may affect how well they perform, so unusually high bitrates can be problematic and HD audio passthough will vary from both box to box but also firmware.

Just cutting some holes in the top makes a difference however I fitted a bigger heatsink on the CPU which cost around a £1. Not had a glitch since. These boxes have been known to top 90C when pushed hard which is a joke. Mine rarely hits 60C now modded.
It's a great shame that a reasonably high spec box is reuined by a poorly designed case.

The box simply has no ventilation holes whatsoever and a practically non existent heatsink on the CPU. Once sorted and running android 7.1.1 your good to go. There are currently 4 popular firmware updates for this box the newest being dated 19-06-2017. The commonly noted WiFi issues are simply incorrect antenna placement within the box and easily fixed. The bonus hidden extra USB ports are also a nice bonus.

The X5 seems a little niche when similar spec but probably more versatile …The X5 seems a little niche when similar spec but probably more versatile dual OS Teclast 8" tablet is same money http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_598248.html

Dual boot Windows/Android does reduce the amount of available space left on the eMMC for Windows and Android will get precisely zero upgrade path on the x86 platform, so worth bearing in mind.

Only having the one Micro USB slot may also be a potential disadvantage.

Not too bad for the price but limited as a general Windows PC in terms of grunt with only 2Gb RAM.

Forget using Chrome as a browser as it really struggles, so edge it will have to be.

Where it will shine is with regards to video playback in Kodi (VLC etc will struggle with some formats) as long as you know the SOC limitations.

So no 10 bit HEVC (8 bit only) or VP9 playback but for pretty much all that most people will play (including [email protected]) Kodi will breeze through it.

Also has the major advantage over Android boxes in that your favourite streaming services will work out of the box.

No root or HDMI detection issues that prevent so many streaming services from running.

So as an 'it works out of the box with no faffing about' video TV box it will be a valid alternative to Android, with the time saved messing about compensating for the added cost.

If you are looking for a PC that has all but quite basic functionality then look for something with 4Gb RAM and more storage at least, like the Hibox Hero, albeit a third of the price more expensive, or an Apollo lake box, which is even more expensive.

Dolby AC3/DTS are natively supported and Atmos and other advanced formats will be down mixed to AC3/DTS with the right settings.

Kodi 17 also works out of the box, so no issues with codecs like you see on Rockchip and Amlogic Android boxes.

Also factor in the cost of mouse/keyboard functionality as this does not come with a remote.

The only other thing to be wary of is that whilst the blurb states that 128Gb TF card is supported, the actual controller will be of the more generic type that will support 32Gb across the board but will have issues with some cards over and above that, so will be something of a compatibility lottery.

Worth pointing out that with the odd honourable exception, Chinese …Worth pointing out that with the odd honourable exception, Chinese manufacturers have a different mindset than we are used to in the West. Thorough product develpment, quality control and post sale support are viewed as optional luxuries. Corners are sometimes cut e.g. quality parts substituted for inferior ones if needs require. Once a device is launched, it goes on the back burner and the focus is on rushing to get the next product finished and out the door. For this reason it is unlikely that a Chinese manufacturer will become a mainstream brand anytime soon. I purchased a dual OS Chuwi Hi 12 tablet last year. Great concept, decent hardware, lovely screen but with several bugs. e.g. The microsd slot now doesn't work on both Android and Windows 10 (common fault with no Chuwi fix) , excessive battery drain and so on. Zero prospect of an official upgrade to the Android 5 it came with. Unless you like problem solving, figuring out workarounds and smoothing rough edges, then perhaps best leaving chuwi products alone.

From a commercial perspective, there's always an ongoing cost associated with providing software updates particularly as you have to pay licensing fees to Google for the different versions of Android. Even Samsung don't provide support or upgrades for versions of Android on their older phones.

Cheap tablets from smaller Chinese manufacturers are never going to have the quality of say an iPad or the technical support from Apple as margins are already wafer thin. That's one reason why they're cheaper in the first place. If I were to buy an Android tablet for £100, I would buy it in the knowledge that that is what you're getting and nothing else in future. If you want something with X number of years of future proofing and software updates, it's better to buy a (more expensive) higher end device.

That said, I think you'll see a number of manufacturers increasingly provide premium devices out of China in the near future and those products will just get better and better. You only have to look at how well companies like Huawei, Xiaomi and One Plus are doing to know that. The Xiaomi Air 12/13 for example is a superb laptop (though not cheap) and that was their first attempt. I can definitely see companies like Jumper and Chuwi bringing out products in the near future that are increasingly competitive with established brands. The Jumper EZBook3 Plus looks good as does the forthcoming Chuwi Lapbook Air. Which each generation of product, they will improve. Let's not forget that these are relatively young companies whereas the like of HP and Apple have been around for decades.

When you think about it, most companies are just system builders who buy in parts from other companies - CPU, motherboard, LCD panels, keyboards etc - and put them together rather than produce bespoke designs themselves. WIth that in mind, it really shouldn't be difficult to produce a good quality device provided you a make a good selection of components in the first place. The issue isn't whether its possible but whether its viable in terms of cost, sales and profitability for them. The Xiaomi Air for example is very well balanced in terms of component choices and quality but then, its noticeably more expensive (presumably to allow a profit margin) at £380-£700. The Chuwi Lapbook 14.1 is alot cheaper at £175 but then there are obviously compromises in terms of some component choices eg. N3450 CPU, 64GB storage etc and it's never going to have the build quality of a Macbook at £1,000. At the end of the day, you pay your money and make your own choice. As long as you make the purchase with your eyes wide open, I think it's good that there is the choice available to consumers.

I don't believe that all tablets and laptops with the same Broadcom and Realtek modules suddenly stopped working well because Windows released incompatible update.A responsible manufacturer make sure that their product works of at least tries. A small company like Chuwi is obviously going to have less resources to devote to driver issues on a cheap tab with wafer thin margins than say the Microsoft driver team on the Surface Book but I still suspect the issue is more Microsoft related and one of the downsides of Windows requiring individual drivers for the million and one different pieces of hardware out there. Unless Chuwi have picked very obscure or old Broadcom or Realtek chips which are no longer supported, it's really for Broadcom and Realtek to provide the appropriate drivers. I remember that even Nvidia had problems when Microsoft were forcing through graphic card driver updates that conflicted with a number of their cards.

As for the Tab 3 and Kindle which you mentioned, neither of them are Windows based which is probably why they don't have the same problems!

I had similar issues with a Lenovo laptop when the HDD failed and I had to do a clean install of Windows - it took absolutely ages trying to iron out all the individual driver issues.

Any recommendations for a 720/1080 WiFi IP indoor camera that's reasonably good & doesn't cost too much?

I agree with comments above, having had 5 action cameras now. Quality not just a 4K logo on a random cheap camera. BUT Aukey is my fav camera that isn't a GoPro and comes with remote, 2 batteries and does 4K @30fps. But I would rather do 1080 at 60fsp it's so much better for smoothness. Oh and the Aukey 4K camera is £59 on Amazon!!

Has the same image sensor as the Hero 4 so should comparable. My Sjcam SJ7 has the same sensor and processor as this T5e I think and it's been a cracking little camera. Could no way justify spending another £150 or more on a Hero 4 and the stupidly inflated prices of a second battery, charger etc that Gopro charge. Getting nothing extra for the money.
Only thing I'd consider is customer support and FW updates for newish cameras where they sell them with bugs that may still need ironing out.

90 quid for a no-name brand chinese knock off, no ta.

And it's misleading to say it's £145 on amazon, as it's not amazon selling it, it's ThiEYE themselves selling it at that price! So it's no indication of actual price.

Do note that various sellers on ebay selling T5e for £92.99, which is more realistic of actual price. So realistically 4 quid cheaper at best than gearbest, which is hardly a breathtaking deal imho

Just a word of warning about these so called GoPro alternatives.I …Just a word of warning about these so called GoPro alternatives.I purchased a cheap so called 4K action camera for my kids to mess about with in the pool, but the quality of the 4K is no better than 720p on my GoPro hero 4 silver.Too many people get hung up on resolution and think having 4K automatically means it's going to look good, but resolution and quality are two different things, and more often than not these cheaper alternatives have the resolution but have nowhere near the quality.I'm not saying this camera is bad as I've not seen any footage, but I'd try and view some before I committed to making a purchase.

Yes you can't just get any old one, but this one has good user reviews and example footage on YouTube.

[quote=89quidyoucantgowrong]Gearbest ripped me off on this deal when I ordered. The code worked fine in the cart back in the 12th. The price dropped and I chose Paypal for payment, then logged in to pay. The total in Paypal was listed in US dollars so I didn't notice they'd removed the discount until checking my emails the next day. (I'm on hold, so not checking so often). I emailed Gearbest to complain, asked for refund or cancellation, got no reply. Emailed again a day or two later and they're saying it's dispatched, so tough luck. I have been avoiding Gearbest due to their reputation. Should have stayed away, I guess. I'll have to try raising a complaint with Paypal now.

Yeah, thanks, I try to avoid having loads of apps on my phone, but from the desktop site, when you search, it gives the option to set up email notifications - same as having an alert to my phone, in the form of an email

Quite impressed with the notification options actually, being able to specify minimum hotness etc... pretty cool, I'll probalby use it a lot now I've sene how it works.

Heat added. Grabbed one.

Amazon are selling this for ~100 quid. is it worth buying this from Gearbest considering Duty and VAT on this?

Do any of these perform well in low light ( I have a Sony actioncam but really disappointed with footage in darker conditions) ?

Did anyone else get this at the OP price, as I did at £684 yesterday. Gearbest are now claiming I live in a remote area, and therefore have to pay shipping surcharges, which DHL state my postcode is not on their Remote Delivery schedule. Just wondering if this is normal business practise? Doubtful I will go ahead with the added risk of 15% import tax on top of all fees.

I'm just speaking from my personal experience - my own AMD laptop had overheating issues and had to throttle it myself, where I work I've have had issues with AMD-based machines blowing their capacitors, and everything Intel-based (which are older than the AMD-based PCs) have been reliable. These newer AMDs are probably fine. But I've been bitten too many times, so I'm staying away. Just thought I'd share.

AMD motherboards are manufactured by the same people who make Intel boards... (Gigabyte, Asus, MSI...) So if you have an issue with failures it's either unlucky or using a cheap MB.

Gormond11th Aug

Wow that is just not true, AMD Ryzen is just as reliable as Intel Core ix.

Unknown Keyboard layout, chinese Windows 10 and customs/duty charges might not make this the bargain it should be.

Also, VAT is a bit of a worry. Anybody have any experience ordering from their Chinese warehouse?
