This gritty, seven-part miniseries chronicles the befuddling first 40 days of the Iraq war from the perspective of the Marines' First Recon Battalion. As the soldiers journey into Baghdad, they face unclear conditions and bear the often deadly brunt of misguided bureaucratic decisions. Read our exclusive interview with ex-Marine Rudy Reyes on his time making the mini-series.

Based on Evan Wright's best-selling book, and brought to the screen by the creators of The Wire, David Simon and Ed Burns, Generation Kill's viewpoint remains firmly fixed on the ground level, rather than proselytise the show uses its large cast and broad canvas to show war in all its visceral chaos, allowing viewers the chance to take what they can from steeping themselves in the black humour and confused terror of the experience.

Except that Jarhead was rubbish and this is amazing.

Ordered. That's £48 HUKD has cost me this week.

Fantastic series.

Reminds me that i should go back and finish watching them....managed 3 episodes and got bored with them! (cue people saying its not supposed to be all action, thats the point etc etc....i know!:-D)

great deal, worth snapping up now if you're interested... last time this was posted Amazon quickly zoomed it back up to full price though the next morning (i put it in my basket @ £17.99 and was browsing for something else and when i returned to my basket, it helpfully informed me that the price of the object had changed, back up to £27... Pah!)

That says it all really!

This is an incredible character drama with some of the best dialogue since... well, I finished watching The Wire for the second time. Not something you can dip in and out of, but highly engaging if you stick with it. Give it another chance tfish!

Highly recommended

I thought technically it was right up there (to the button you press for night sight driving) , but as a character drama, or especially a realistic account of military life it was REALLY a TV account?

It is WELL worth watching but the thing that always drags me down with these kind of dramas is the portrayal of the military as loud whooping, swearing, blood crazy incompetent morons talking like they are children in the playground and utter idiots -especially in American dramas.

These men face possible death every day, their life depends on professionalism - they don't constantly behave like Beavis and Butthead.

To be fair there were a few characters thrown in to reflect that, but they seemed the minority - maybe that was a statement?

I think you may be looking far too deeply into the psyche of "fighting men" - I was in the Army for 6 years and it's simply a cross-section of society in uniform.

There were r-soles, idiots, incompetents, great guys, wise guys and anything else you can think of really.

The "average" guy (or girl) in the military probably ended up there for lack of choices or just because they didn't know what they wanted to do with themselves at the end of the day and see it as a possible opportunity to better their lives or experience things that are not often possible in civilian life..

Army life is a cycle of boredom, routine, monotony, bull$hit, fun, fear and excitement in no particular order.

Edit: The only thing I've ever watched, that accurately reflected life in the British Army is the 1965 movie called "The Hill" which stars Sean Connery.

You really need to read the books ,This isnt a fictional drama with made up characters, most of the dialogue is quoted word for word from the books wriitten by people who were there,The final scene with Johnny Cash playing "when the man comes around" which mixes real life footage and footage from the series says it all,This is what it was really like,

I thought it wasn't too bad - just watched episode one this morning.

As with most military dramas they always make things a bit too "nice" and most of the characters tend to be overly reasonable and balanced - not something that reminds me of Army life at all :whistling:

So far I believe they have captured the general idea quite well though - the scene of the guys singing in the humvee could have been plagiarised from my own experiences but the song we were singing (stretch of the imagination!) was, "oh I do like to be beside the seaside".

On episode 3 tonight - so far it's pretty good in my estimation as an ex Arty Recon chap

Pretty much sums up the madness of the chain of command and the failure to supply essentials to the troops.

Well I just watched the last part tonight - excellent show
