Genuine 1Kg Solid Gold Kilo Olympic Coins From The Royal Mint - £100,000 Each

This is not an April Fool's joke, although I'm convinced that the Olympic committee are having a laugh!

There are only 60 available, and I've just ordered 2 - so be quick or lose out!

A historic new UK coin for a landmark event!

In 2008 the Royal Mint's Olympic Coin Programme shared its vision to create the first ever UK coin weighing one Kilogram. To do this required a change to UK Legislation, specifically an amendment to the 40-year-old 1971 Coinage Act, a clause which limited the weight to which UK coins could be made. The launch of these two magnificent UK kilo coins, the first kilo coins of the realm, is the culmination of a journey which saw the introduction of this new primary legislation, itself further evidence that at the highest levels the UK not only supports the aspirations of London 2012, but is prepared to make legislative history in the process.

The proud few who will own a limited edition Royal Mint Olympic kilo coin from the Royal Mint will become part of that legacy.

The gold has a face value of £1,000, but each of the 60 coins will cost collectors £100,000 (Good to see "Rip-Off Britain" at work, lol)

The price of gold is really sky rocketing. This was £39.995 two minutes ago!

Looks like a kids drawing, the kind you put on the fridge then throw away when they aren't looking

Because there was no price on the Royal Mint site, I checked current gold prices and added on a bit to allow for novelty value - which puts a kilo of pure gold coinage at around the £35K mark.

However, doing more research to make sure this deal was genuine revealed that the actual sale price is £100K (referenced in the Guardian press release above from November 2011)

Terrible artwork.

It looks like an oversized cheap chocolate coin.

These will go straight onto eBay, I reckon.

Imagine how annoyed you'd feel if you accidentally put one of these into a vending machine

like everything else form the UK's royal mint is insanely over priced, on wont be going straight on to ebay, besides from sellers that like to make a lost

would also if 100k is ture be subject to 20% vat since its more than 180% mark up over spot so not covered as investment/vatfree gold*note below*, so total would be 120k *or £3,750/Toz if anyone wants an toz of gold for that price pm me lol* for something that can be got for 34.5k

*2.1 What is investment gold?
Investment gold is:

(a) gold of a purity not less than 995 thousandths that is in the form of a bar, or a wafer, of a weight accepted by the bullion markets;

(b) a gold coin minted after 1800 that:

is of a purity of not less than 900 thousandths;
is, or has been, legal tender in its country of origin; and
is of a description of coin that is normally sold at a price that does not exceed 180% of the open market value of the gold contained in the coin*

I'd consider it if it was chocolate

quite an ugly and non pristine design on that gold one

wow. lord coe needs a slapping down.

I'm just wondering what the local corner shop would say on a monday morning if you tried to buy your morning paper with it? Shopkeepers hate it when you use a tenner or twenty to buy a 40p paper first thing in the morning. Can you imagine the change you'd have to have.
The artwork is terrible on the coin. It is very over priced, and only a select few rich pillocks will be able to buy one, let alone want one.

i would think the shopkeeper would be more than happy to give you a fresh stack of 20 x £50 out of the cash safe and let you have the paper free, tho yes no one but a few "to rich to know what to do with money" will buy these

About £34 with their valuations.

I wouldn't give the £1,000 for it never mind £100,000
If that's the Best we can Do, Heaven help Us!!!

I pulled an old setee off a skip and it had a few of these down the back.

why you only buy from the big dealers or the mints them selfs (or ofc in smaller amounts/sealed mint crets since with the time of making custom small tungsten (sub 1-2mm) rods or making passable cret cards (for not low but lower cost items 1040~ toz currently) it just not worth it when you can salt larger bars @ 34k~

Face value of a legal tender coin is totally different to spot … Face value of a legal tender coin is totally different to spot price.Value of copper in a copper 2p is around about 5p. The coin is still only legal tender for 2p though. Thats why you dont see too many copper coins now (pre 92)Old link, but illustrates

you miss my point. This is 1KG of solid gold. Spot price is about £35K, not £1K as the OP states

No, I think you'll find that the coin has a par value of £1,000, which doesn't reflect the fact that the raw material is worth considerably more.
