I signed up 9 months ago when the cashback offer was £60 which I received, so far this year I've claimed £250 in Amazon vouchers and used the airport vouchers.

Well worth signing up as a lot of offers are out for Amex card holders.

quidco is down :-)

Are you going to pay the £125 annual fee after year 1 or will you cancel. Thats the only thing that puts me off

I intend to cancel after the first year is up, but will happily re-apply once this offer comes back. They seem to give the same offer every 3 months or so.

Just waiting to get enough points for a final £25 Amazon voucher first. :-)

Strange, was working a few mins ago when I researched this post. Sure it'll be back up soon.

Signed up for this card before for the £60 Quidco. Recieved cashback and cancelled without ever using the card.

I've got the Platinum Everyday Cashback Card now (no annual fee), which seems to have earned me a tidy sum in cashback.

Better to wait until cash back increases. I remember it going up to £80

£20 paid in May :-/

How'd you get £250 vouchers?

Do they still do the amazon vouchers, I could'nt find them 6 weeks ago and got £150 pcworld gift card instead. Also had £60 Quidco earlier in the year. I will cancel this card before the years up.

I've just checked amazon are back on.

How'd you get £250 vouchers?

Every time you spend you get reward points, once you have enough reward points you can cash them in for Amazon, M&S, Apple etc vouchers.

If you put most of your spending through this card and pay it off each month you'll walk away with a fair whack of vouchers.

The vouchers are showing now, perhaps they were not showing when you looked?

I use tesco club card credit card for my everyday purchases which gives 1% cash back in terms of Clubcard point but you can then double or triple these points through Clubcard offers.

Could someone tell me if this is better or worse?

£52.5 Cash back from topcashback.

Is platinum card bettter than Gold as you get more points and other options ?

I find that retailers either refuse Amex or ask if I have a Mastercard/Visa card instead. Surprised you manage to find so many willing suppliers.

I personally use both - every six months I take out this Amex with the cash back and do 2 - 3 grand on it for the bonus points - I usually swap these for Avios and then reward saver flights. The bonus reward is only available if you haven't held a rewards amex in the last 6 months. If you keep hold of the card for over a year a £125 fee is applied. Use a tesco card in between Amexs

It's not as good as Tesco when you work it all out but the initial offer and bonus from quidco are very good. 20,000 points exchanges to a £100 amazon gift voucher or I would prefer nearly 2 nights in a sol melia hotel (for 22,000) or for 18,000 points 2 flights to Milan (+£35 avios tax pp). Also the shopping bonuses are very good like Argos £50 spend £25 credit!

I use both Amex & Tesco & just work out what works out best

I used to have one and shop in independent shops on occasion - and i found they begrudgingly accept it as they are hammered in processing costs from AMex. you may feel the don but they smile through their teeth

don't forget the regular statement credit offers they have been running give e.g. £25 back on £50 spend at Argos etc. Personally I have had about £200 this year

How does the Tesco credit card give 1% cashback? On regular spend its only 1 clubcard point for every £4 spent which is only 0.25%. Even if you boost that I still wouldn't value it as much as the Amex rate.

might give this a whirl. cheers

If you shop at major high street retailers and the big supermarket chains then most of them accept Amex. It's smaller places like independent shops, cafes and restaurants that can't afford the higher Amex fees that don't accept it. Even Poundland take Amex!

Amex ran the Small Shop 2014 campaign from 6 Dec-21 Dec and even though they listed quite a few small shops accepting Amex, it turned out to be untrue as those shops refused to accept Amex cards. Luckily I enquired if they will accept Amex before doing the purchase.

I think stainless77 has calculated this correctly but like you say 1% is using 4 x partners..example below:-

£20k spend on Amex normally will give you 20,000 points (excluding any promotional deals etc) at 1 per £ transfers to £100 Amazon voucher (or 2 flights to Italy! +tax or 2 nights hotel etc)

£20k spend of Tesco would give you 5,000 clubcard points (at a rate of 4 to 1 - some long term customers get more)
5,000 clubcard = £50 X 4 partner = £200 (X3 partner = £150) so it just depends what you want to transfer them for. Excluding the promotional offers, Tesco day to day spending works out better, so by having both it's a win win!

True, although another small caveat is that you only get 1 point per whole £4 spent, so for example an £11.99 purchase will only get you 2 points - each purchase is treated independently (as is Amex but not as harshly as its 1 per £.

Thank you, already had a platinum card but tried and got accepted for this too!!!

Double the bonuses!!

Thanks OP!

Edit - I just phoned them, AMEX Gold is a Charge Card, my Platinum one is a Credit card, thus offers are completely separate and I'm entitled to both!!!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!

If you have that guarantee then thats great news! I was going by the terms and conditions on the Amex site

americanexpress.com/uk/…rd/

"The 20,000 Membership Rewards bonus points will be awarded onto your account once you have been approved and you have spent and charged £2,000 within the first three months of Cardmembership. All introductory offers are subject to change, can be withdrawn at any time and are not available if you currently hold or have held any other Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Cards in the past 6 months. Please note that it can take up to one month for bonus points to be awarded to your account."

Yep - Lady on the phone told me different :-)

I use this for the Virgin Air Miles

Is there a prize for finding a retailer that takes American Express...?

I am a previous Amex gold card customer, can I still get this offer?

IMO the best credit card overall for day to day spending has to be the Santander 123, even after accounting for the annual fee. That said, if you get accepted, this is good for the rewards points in the first year and then cancel.

MSE has a great section devoted to credit cards etc. one such feature is a tool to see your eligibility for getting a card, avoiding an actual credit check mark on your history. As this is a charge card, a credit check might not apply, but I know the tool still shows if you'd be eligible for this card (as well as others) before you go ahead and apply. Worth checking out!

Anyone else having problems going through topcash to apply?

and I now see £10.10 for this Preferred gold card

The credit card is nothing to do with Membership Rewards (it gives cashback instead) so no problems here.

If you had a Platinum Charge card, then you wouldn't get the bonus as this earns MR points.

Good deal. Thanks
