You could have bought a car... with pedals for that price
Claris works brilliantly, wide range cassette for easy hill climbing, beautiful bike and sub 10kg weight and made in Giant's own factory which is one of the most advanced bicycle factories in the world. Likely from Giant's mainland China factory not their Taiwanese factory for but still a better factory than most bike brands. I think they have changed the tyres from 700x25 to 700x28 for this years model so its more comfortable with more grip. To me that is a huge improvement. In performance the difference between this bike and high end bikes is quite marginal. This delivers fantastic performance for very little money.
XL out of stock
For £200 more the Contend 2 SL 2019 road bike in black & red for £599 looks to be the better long term bet as it comes with the latest tiagra and 10 gears. However if you are just starting out then an extra £200 is allot.

I have found the cost to change groupsets so high it's been cheaper to sell one bike and buy another one with the groupset you want.
Pretty decent. I've been considering upgrading from flat bars to drops. And no Shimano Tourney shifters here either
If I want to get into road cycling any suggestions of a noob road bike? £400 is a good price but would this bike be too good for someone that is thinking of getting into road cycling as road running is doing my knees in?
Thanks.

If you think £400 is a good price then there is no reason to think this is ‘too much bike for you’ as it is an all rounder. I’d say go for it.

The cheapest road bikes start about £150 but at that price they have short life components and will need much more maintenance due to the basic parts. Shimano Claris prettty much represents the entry level for quality road bike drivetrains. Maybe black friday see what you can find but I doubt you can find a Claris road bike any less than £250 and it won't be as good as this Contend. £400 is a great price for a bike of this quality. You can buy s/hand but you need to know what you are buying and not buying something with a fatigued frame or a worn drivetrain that might cost a lot of money to fix and replace parts. If your employer has a cycle to work scheme then that is worth considering.

Thanks for the great info. My employer does have a Cycle to Work Scheme from time to time so will get some research done and see what's on offer through the scheme. Thanks again.
This is a miles better bike and the discount code still works: hotukdeals.com/dea…746
I'm hoping to sell my drop handle Trek for a flat bar bike, not comfortable with drop handles

Good deal, I’ve got the sl1 disc and it’s good all rounder.
One warning, that size guide seems way out to me, giant bikes come up very big, I’m 6’2” (189cm) and large is just right.

It's a better bike for sure but miles better? I would see it as small upgrade in real terms. A bit lighter and a few more gears. I've seen people comment that Claris can shift more reliably than Tiagra, the shifting accuracy is not as precise with Claris as only 8 cogs compared to 10 so while Claris is more clunky with larger shifts it is engineering wise easier to keep Claris shifting reliably so could be a better option for a heavier used commuting bike or touring bike. Both are fantastic bikes though and great value at these prices in my opinion.

Well I'd consider a better, lighter frame with a more compliant seatpost, better groupset, better wheelset to be worth it, and not a small upgrade.

Anyway dont want to detract from OP's deal.

My point is really about minimal performance gains which may not be a big deal to many people. If you use something like this;

bikecalculator.com/

To calculate the performance of each bike its not a huge difference to say the least I would say diminishing returns kicks in even at £150 difference with only marginal gains, I think there is about 1kg difference between the bikes and the gear range is identical except Tiagra has 2 more inbetween gears on the rear cogset so easy to make a fair comparison. I don't want to be negative about the Contend SL though a brilliant bike but I just feel for ultimate bang per buck you can't really beat the standard Contend, brilliantly made and engineered and sub 10kg even at this £400 price point plus high weight limits and a very long warranty not offered by many competing bikes. Giant offer such fantastic bikes for so little money. Even the entry level Giant Contend looks like a high end bike until you look at the groupset, beautiful finish etc so likely a magnet to thieves if you are not careful though. Saying that I'm not as keen on the red finish myself preferring the black/green look.

Both are good deals but the giant does look better value.

Can we knock on the head for once and for all the issue of bike weight once it's under 10kg. It makes such a small difference unless you cat race its not worth worrying about.

I'm not sure which Giant you are saying is better value but both fantastic value to me for sure and a great choice which ever you go for.
