I'm normally a lurker here but I wanted to share this as I just purchased one and I think it's a great deal. Read the end of the thread to find out how to get the £5 off code.

I've been looking for a decent basic spec road bike to replace my aging Specialized Secteur for some time now and this is a great price for a top brand bike with a (mostly) Shimano Sora group set. If you are after a decent entry level road bike you can't go far wrong with this one - check out a review here:

cyclingweekly.co.uk/rev…9-2

It has been on sale at £449 for a while and has just dropped to £399. Rutland are also running auto generated £5 off discount codes at the moment if you visit the site from google shopping. The codes are one use so they will expire when someone uses them but here are a couple of tested and working codes for convenience: 0FJXI and LTRSS. Topcashback is also worth a try at 3.15% which would bring the price down to around £383!

Fantastic frame, lowest price I've seen this. No brainer if you want an entry level road bike

Nice find, personally not into road bikes, but that's a great lil deal.

Have you considered this? … Have you considered this? http://www.merlincycles.com/felt-f95-road-bike-2014-72321.html

I have to say I did seriously consider the Felt, it's been around at this price for quite a while now and certainly looks a good spec for the money. For me though, the Giant Defy frame has a fantastic reputation and the finishing kit I would expect to be of a higher quality, which is important. I went for the Giant, I don't think you'd go too far wrong with either for under £400 though!

Wow,what's not to like.

Great bike, Giant are some of the best value bikes around imo, brilliant price, well done.

Gah, it's not good when you seriously consider buying a bike instead of new blinds throughout the house...

I have the felt f95 and it's a great light weight entry bike, picked it up when on offer, really like the Giant though, bring on the summer !

i own this bike and bought it from the giant store at rutland, i had to send it back as the frame had a fault with the head tube creaking badly and needed a new frame which took around 3 months!! In my experience from rutland cycles aswell was a bad one, with it taking them so long to repair my bike i wouldn't use them again.

I got this bike from Rutland last year. Great service from Ben at Rutland and excellent value for money. A fantastic commuter bike I am really happy with my Giant Defy 3. It was the first road bike I have ever owned and I ride it 6 days a week.

Sturmey Archer? Now those were the days!

Great stocking filler thanks

Was really tempted to buy this back when it was £450 with a free set of Giant mudguards. Looks like a great frame.

Poor size availability. Good price otherwise.

What size would people recommend for a 6ft person?
thanks

Depends on your budget/needs. The Giant is a better bike with better spec, the Triban is cheaper. My topcashback tracked at £12.44 by the way making the price (hopefully) £382.55. I'd say the Giant is definitely worth the extra £50. Both look good bikes though.

Have a look at the size guide on the defy 1, it points to M/L but you should double check your inside leg length

Don't go for the large then, you can always make a smaller bike bigger with longer seat posts and stems however you can't make a bigger bike smaller

I Would suggest the M/L, i am 6,1 ft and feel a little stretch on my Large defy 4.
Great deal

XS, S & M... all out of stock :-(

The short & stumpy ones lose out again!

just have to stick to my 3 road bikes for me

Amazing price for this bike. Bought one at £449. But it sustained some damage in transit, so decided to replace it for something else.
Still managed to ride it a couple of times before returning. Amazing bike. External bb means it has very good power transfer. Latest Sora drivetrain works really well. And lastly the frame - very compliant and comfortable to ride. All helped by the lot top tube and long seatpost.
A genuine steal at this price. Even better if you can get it through cycle-to-work.

Wow that's big! Do you use a stepladder to get on?

Really tempted to buy as my first road bike. Upgrading from my Specialized hybrid which I've used the last few years for commuting and general fitness rides. It's a great bike, but I feel like it's holding me back a bit

What's the difference between this and the Defy 1? There seems to be a lot of emphasis given to the Shimano 105 shifting. Is it such a big deal compared to what the Defy 3 has?

In my experience, Sora may be the bottom end of Shimano's quality road group sets, but If set up right, they shift perfectly, are reliable and durable. The main difference between Sora and the higher end group sets is mainly weight and a couple of extra gears per chainring. 105 is great but probably be overkill for your first road bike. It's easy to get sucked into the weight thing but losing 500 grams can cost a huge amount of money in cycling and doesn't make anyone that much faster. My advice would be to go for the Defy 3 for the first road bike, then spend silly money on a carbon bike when you get hooked like i did... :-P

Ordered, will be my first new bicycle. Lets hope this keeps me motivated for work commute.

Is it a composite and which year is it please..... I bought the composite last yr and don't wanna feel too ripped off, it has tiagra groupset

soooooo jealous!

Just ordered through cyclescheme, so voucher for £443.99 (11% added to price). Cyclescheme price comes to £313.45 and as it's under £500 only 3% extended use deposit so approx £325.00 in total to pay.

Bought a Defy 1 from Rutland last year via a deal posted on hotukdeals. Very good bike.
This one also looks a good deal and I doubt anyone will be disappointed with it either.

Same for me, ordered this morning, although as I pay more tax mine will be just over £260. Just waiting for my company to sign it off.
