GiffGaff are offering 4G as standard

Found 5th Aug 2015
I don't think anyone else has posted this yet, I've had an email from GiffGaff saying that from 2nd September they will be upgrading my 3G allowance to 4G at no extra cost.

With this upgrade to 4G, some goodybags will be changing their allowance and others will stay the same.

I'm currently paying £7.50 per month, so will get:

500MB 4G data
250 mins
Ultd texts
All goodybags include free calls to GiffGaff numbers and are tethering friendly.

4G service will be available in selected areas with 4G coverage. 4G speed will vary depending on location and number of people using the service. 4G compatible device is required.

More info at:

community.giffgaff.com/t5/…400

Let's not get into a debate about network coverage, I can only get signal where I live with O2/GiffGaff

ID mobile is cheaper with 4G data

I see their £20 "unlimited" one has 4g up to 6gb use, then its unlimited use at slower speeds, probably 3g ?

£10 pm is max I will pay and will expect at least 4GB of 4g data

Probably worth the £2.50 a month extra if you read the reviews of ID mobile s21.com/id-…htm

Who offers this please without a contract? I would be interested at this price

Is this only for existing gg customers or for new customers too?

Vodafone offers this for £8.88pm on 12 month contract after quidco and employee advantage discount. Of course you aren't gonna get this sort of price without a contract.

Im however using the 100gb per month for 2 months offer (£10 top up required) from EE at the mo and hope to use it for another 2 months after with another sim.

There are deals everywhere. You can even buy data sims on ebay with 6m unlimited internet (1gb downloads) for around £30 so about £5 per month

I get 500 mins, unltd txts and 3gb of data with Giffgaff, but because it's going to 4G they said I'll now get 2gb instead. Not happy tbh.

You would have thought people might have learned their lesson after TalkMobile but it seems not. X)

Giffgaff changing their plans annoyed me as i usually use 2.8GB a month so their £12 package is perfect now it's being "upgraded" to 2GB from 3GB. Gonna have to find a new network. They keep changing it. Started off as £10 unlimited then £12 unlimited then £12 3gb now £12 2GB.

Join Three and never look back. I recommend Three to everyone I know and nobody has been disappointed so far.

I agree with Spark, I just switched to Three ahead of my holiday in France and it works brilliantly.

the only problem is I get a dreadful 3 signal at home, and their Wi-Fi calling app seems pretty dreadful.

o2 has been best for me in the past, so I'll look at giff gaff / Tesco and o2's own SIM only plans (sale prices at the moment seem ok if not "hot", but a £40 quidco sweetener helps)

I am with Three, on their "one for all 15" packs, but it is going up to 20, which is annoying. But I will end up paying it as it's still the cheapest for unlimited

Mind you before you all jump in because of the low prices and PAYG. Even with 4g, they use the O2 network which is VERY slow from my own experience.

EE has the best network in terms of coverage and speed. Have a look at the special summer SIM deal which is going on until 31/8.

Re the Three comments - looking to move away from them as soon as my contract up - reception is not great - frequently I don't get texts - support have been useless. I was with GiffGaff before Three and only reason I left was lack of 4G offering - good timing this has come up as may go back to them.

From the link above:
Can I still use data after I've used 6GB with Always On?
Absolutely - in fact, you can continue to use data right up until the goodybag expires at no extra cost. After 6GB of data usage, speeds will be reduced to 256kbps between 8am and midnight (the rest of the time you will have full speed service). Tethering works a little differently, it's only available on the first 6GB that you use each month. You will receive a text message to let you know when you reach 6GB of data usage on Always On.

ID mobile don't (I looked into this): idmobile.co.uk/hel…faq

giffgaff do: giffgaff.com/goo…bag
"Tethering is permitted on the £7.50 goodybag and will work on all smartphones with an inbuilt tethering feature."

They upped my £12 unlimited 3g to £15 and now they have got rid of unlimited and I am supposed to be happy with 4g? I don't even have a 4g phone!

Almost all the reviews on every mobile phone network are one star reviews by disgruntled customers looking for an avenue to rant. And your point is?

There will always be bad experiences and good experiences, and from what you've posted it's all only negative reviews. Can confirm because I was on Three and had stellar customer service all the way up to the end of my contract, and when I requested a PAC code to switch networks. Therefore this website's 'review' section is moot.

My other half is on GiffGaff and I have considered the switch from EE (have had GiffGaff on an iPad before) but the one thing that has put me off is the difference between a GiffGaff 4G speed and an EE 4G speed... I'll be very interested to do some live tests when her SIM upgrades to 4G!

ps: she has an iPhone 5, which I understand isn't compatible with 4G on O2 but is (for some reason) on GiffGaff. Can anyone confirm or deny?!

500mb 4G is rather just pointless. At least they are getting rid of Unlimited data which was never really Unlimited since they would kick you off the network if you used too much
Edited by: "newbie1001" 5th Aug 2015

Just to update my earlier comment, 2 GB 12 month plan on o2 with unlimited calls and texts cost £15.30 at current sale price. if you factor in £40 quidco, it works out at £11.96 per month.

GiffCrap can't match the performance of EE or Three.

When I got my first 4G-capable phone, I excitedly bought a 4G Goodybag, only to find the connection was worse! It kept buffering every few minutes (I listen to TuneIn Radio a lot, and live in a city centre).

The replies on their Community "helpfully" telling me to connect to city centre Wi-fi were well-meaning, I'm sure, but not exactly useful!

Just call them and threaten to cancel. They will drop the price back down quickly enough.

Yep. Recently switched to Three from EE, and whilst I'm much preferring their service the difference in data speeds is astonishing! I was maxing out around 96Mb/s on EE. Best Three 4G is getting in same area is 10Mb/s!

I was on GiffGaff and they throttle the data speed so much its unreal, I bet they throttle their 4G so its the same speed as normal 3G

Thing is I am only on a PAYG dealio, have been for about a year and a half. Think its worth trying anyway maybe?

Haven't three bought O2 anyway so indirectly bought Giffgaff and Tesco mobile as well? Hopefully the combined network will be a match for EE coverage wise

Why would you choose PAYG over a sim-free contract?

Spark

I've honestly no idea, it's just what I have always had

Nice that they are offering this, but all I ever wanted from giffgaff was decent 3G speeds, eventually gave up and left last month.

giffgaff's service has been going downhill for the past year, they can't handle the amount of customers they now have. Data and signal are getting poorer and poorer month on month. This deal is to sucker in even more customers they can't possibly serve properly
