With the recent spike in GPU prices, I thought this was a very good deal; the next best price I could find on this specific card was at a minimum, £270. There are cheaper 3GB cards around than the £270 price point, but even those are sitting at £235 - £240.

Good price now, but a couple months ago these were 30 quid cheaper, heat added ofc but wont be buying a new gpu this minute, will wait a couple months hoping bitcoin crashes.
Wake me up when the 6GB version hits £169.

Depends if the crypto bubble does burst, which has been "aaaany day now" for months... So I'm not holding my breath.

Cards that have been heavily mined might have poor useful life in them by the time they hit the 2nd hand market also which sucks.
I think that for mining the lower 3Gb will become obsolete in next few months. Once that is the case these will drop to a more reasonable level. If you can wait for 2-3 months, I would.

Rubbish. Lots of people use Nvidia cards to mine, that's why 1070's & above are still stupid prices. The 1060 3 GB is now useless for mining ethereum due to it's limitations.
This aint a bad price at the moment, i paid £240 for a zotac gtx1060 in December now its £360.. i would still wait it out to see if the prices finally normalise though..
I've just had a quick check and a single 1060 should earn upto $2 a day mining, doesn't sound like much but then some people run 10,100,500+ gpus at a time and it then becomes very profitable.

It's no wonder there is a gpu shortage when even the low end cards can turn a profit. Not sure how they can fix it easily either other than something like proving your identity when you purchase to prevent the same person buying stock from every retailer, but that would require them all to share customer information which I guess isn't really acceptable...

Well that's fine but PC gaming has moved onto VR, 1440p, 4K and 120hz+ and a 3GB card simply cannot cope with that kind of demand. Games are only going to get more demanding and buying an already outdated card is a silly idea.

Sounds strange but anything other that 1080p 60hz is still a minority. On 1440p 144hz myself and having to use a gtx 670 which is fine for the games I play with a bit of tinkering. This is a decent card but wouldn’t buy it myself. Still a good deal though as nothing else available sadly

That's basically right, but ethereum (ethash) and some other algorithms too are resistant to asic due to the intensive demand on gpu memory.

It's Ethereum you need to be watching. It hasn't been profitable to mine Bitcoin with off the shelf GPUs for a long time now. You need specialised ASICs.

Just finishes Shadow of the Colossus this morning too.. I was happy playing that at 1080p 60FPS.

Wolfenstein 2, Destiny 2, The evil within 2, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, project cars 2, Final Fantasy 14, Prey 2017, nier Automata, Sniper Elite 4 all require 4GB or more VRAM. I would call those modern games as they were all released in 2017. Hardware demands for 2018 games will be even higher.

The witness is two years old, Cities Skylines is 3 years old and even those were not especially demanding titles. I'm sure there are plenty of switch players who are happy and plenty of SNES players who are happy but they are not playing modern PC titles and modern PC titles demand more than 3GB of VRAM.

If you want to play old games or you're happy to play newer games on on low settings and low res the 3GB will be fine but people get into PC gaming to get better performance than a console and £220 can buy you a PS4 or XBOX One which will play those modern games at higher fidelity than this card can.

Neither of those points is true:
GTX1070 is number 1 on their list - even if you want to debate their ranking, Nvidia cards are used for mining these days
VRAM has a potential impact on mining in multiple ways - DAG Epoch and memory speed

Bitcoin has “crashed” at least 30 times in the last few years, every time it comes back higher. It’s not going anywhere soon

Ah OK. Depends then how quickly word spreads, whether miners move on to other coins, lag before retailers drop prices, etc.
Still of the view it will collapse and then imagine the number of gpus hitting the market.. Its really being financed by speculators and money launderers.

No only idiots mine on nvidia cards... people who have no clue about mining but already own an nvidia card, its much slower.

Still im hoping bitcoin flops hard soon, i wanna build a new PC with the new nvidia cards and i guess the prices are gonna be silly af!

Thanks for proving my point... people who own 1050tis are not gamers... i mean its a cheap ass card and whatever you throw at it? Go chuck any recent game at it and then cry when you see your FPS tank to 30.

Owning a 1050ti and then putting all game settings to low and getting 60 fps is like wiping ur ass with your hand.

So what if a game is at 30 FPS? Gameplay is lost on people like you.

Ohh dear, now i see its pointless arguing with you, enjoy your stutterfest
deleted5795919th Feb

Your the only one getting worked up, you seem very immature.

Im not getting worked up at all, im advising people who actually want a good experience 3gb doesnt cut it.

Youre the one defending your low spec PC saying its this and that but i know for a fact its not... its low end and it cant run any modern game at decent settings bar the crappiest ones.

Now stop being salty and telling me im immature, if someone buys this and expects this and that and then gets crap performance and wonders why its not fair. the 970 has 3.5GB of vram and it runs out easy on decent settings, why buy a 3GB version of a mid tier card when you can pay a little extra to double it and then have no worries?

Now go play games at 30fps mr mature.
deleted5795919th Feb

"Salty" now I know your a kid..You need to stop comparing your …"Salty" now I know your a kid..You need to stop comparing your requirements to that of others.. your very arrogant in your attitude. why are you assuming people buying this want to play the very latest releases in ultra settings at 60fps? the 6GB gives you very little extra performance, not double like your claiming.. you are backing up your noise with zero facts or information.[Image] [Image]

I said modern games... and not console ports either...

Dude im done with you, i mean look at the games you posted LOL wtf... witcher 3 probs the most demanding game there and noway does it get that FPS on them settings, it tanks all over the place on ultra.

You sir have no clue what youre on about, go back to your 30 fps
Why does every piece of gaming hardwear thats posted have to have some child come on and claim that it's useless because it isn't capable of 4k at 120fps? To suggest that this card is only capable of 30fps at low settings is utter nonsense.
