GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

This is a pretty good imaging prog, I've used it for years.

Official description

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

I was thinking of getting this program, but read a few articles that stated the installation can be tricky. It even said it was better to have the program on a USB stick rather than on the computer itself. See article below

I eventually opted for Paint.net instead, also free from:-

GIMP is a powerful program for image manipulation if a little tricky for the beginner...
It can also produce well optimized animated gifs but you might want to use MS Gif Animator (also free) for sorting your frame timings.
GIMP is great if you want do something like sticking your head on somebody else's body or making animations but if you just want to colour-adjust your photos, use paint.net

Oh, and I've never had any installation issues since they moved away from the seperate GTK installation.
