By all reliable accounts they've really messed the HD transfer on this. Supposed to be debatable whether you'd want to upgrade from the DVD version.

Indeed, Paramount have really dropped the ball on this one.

I'm all for Gladiator on Blu Ray but it really sounds like you should wait for a Reissue or Remastered version.

Hopefully it would be a re-issue as that would mean a free exchange program for those that buy this blu ray like they did with the fifth element a while ago.

I pre-ordered this a while ago and only started to read up on the reviews as presumed a quality film should have easily been transferred to Blu Ray.

Sounds no tthe case but will judge for myself as disk sent out on Friday so should get today.

Will watch tonight and see for myself.
If its no good then I am going to complain. :x

gutted just ordered from play at £14.99 on the weekend already sent out

Shame. But if you love Gladiator, you'll get it. I have got each release. I'll still get this one then make up my own mind.

Anyone know if Morrisons deal is nationwide?

Yes it was advertised in one of the national papers yesterday (mirror i think)

Possibly my favourite film of the last 10 years but as I've still not got blu-ray I'll hang fire. Could be a blessing from what some have said of the b-r transfer!

Fair old deal though if you're happy with the quality

£11.69 with staff discount... bargin! well it would be but its on my xmas list! heavy hints to my sister lol

even if it isnt a great transfer it'll still be better than dvd which will mean i can get rid of my 2 disc & 3 disc editions!

sorry! now edited to say staff discount!

According to Hi-Def Digest, it's a decent enough version, but not really matching up the the expectations generated by being the first disc in Paramount's "Sapphire Series".

First of all, this is a Universal release in the UK, not Paramount. Yes it may have come from the same master, but will have had different 'treatment'.

I've only had a quick look at mine now on the PC, but from what I can tell, the transfer isn't that bad at all. I'm quite happy, though will have a further check in the morning on my 'proper' AV system and 50" plasma

Also, I've read elsewhere that the DTS HD master audio track is quite superb! and I wouldn't want to miss that by not having the BR release.....

I think the main beef isn't so much with the disappointing PQ but with the haphazard use of clean-up software that has actually erased objects from the screen.

Been waiting for this

Blimey the review says that things just disappear then reappear throught out the movie? Sounds broken to me.

Our region version has been out in Germany for a while & it's still the same rubbish transfer.

One guy on AVForums (with a quality 50" 1080p HD TV) reckoned it looked so badly 'edge enhanced' in places that it looked like some of the actors had 'force fields' around them.

The thing is, they used an old (2000) and poor transfer for the 'theatrial cut' parts and a much newer (2005) transfer for the extended edition parts.
The extended edition stuff looks great, by all accounts, the theatrical sections bl**dy awful.
It's 'better than DVD' but since when was that the standard by which this stuff is judged?

Braveheart shows what happens when a studio does it right.

My own take on this is that if we buy rubbish the studios will not bother to make the effort and release the highest quality and the stack of very very ordinary and unimpressive high definition films will grow - leaving the mass-market wondering what the fuss is all about and decidedly cold on paying the additional price over DVD.
So much for all the 'premium' guff about Blu-ray; this is exactly the sort of poor work that does high definition no favours.

The DVD was released in several versions, I hope the Blu-ray will be released again and reworked properly.
I cancelled my pre-order after reading the reviews and having read the comments of some regular owners I'm glad I did.

You'll be lucky.
IIRC (and I'll happily stand corrected) the only place where discs were recalled and replaced was in the USA.
I don't think it's ever happened here in the UK with Blu-rays.

Absolutely spot on. Don't put up with the studios just being lazy, they have the technology to do much better than this crap - don't buy it.

rep added for this stance.

Ok i have actually seen this blu ray unlike many people who like to comment on it based upon a single freeze frame image of an arrow with parts of it missing. I am just your average person & not some av tech master who watches his movie's one frame at a time to find all the faults with a blu ray.
To read a review of this blu ray by an honest average person who doesn't know much about digital noise reduction & other such technical terms banded around various av sites follow the link (sorry for the shameless bit of spam)

Why even bother with Blu-Ray at all? The whole point is for flawless pictures, you should be able to freeze frames and admire the PQ.

I admit you shouldn't just judge the PQ by still posted online but come on, do you actually think there is a conspiracy about this movie - that everyone has it in for Paramount?? Nobody has done the same with Braveheart, the reason being that the PQ is pristine.

I think HiDef Digest is a US based site so yes, they will have been reviewing the Paramount version.

this is the equivalent of ironing a shirt then realising you missed a crease and asking yourself the question is it worth ironing again or can i get away with wearing it!

So for people just wanting to watch it will they enjoy it?
is this for people wanting perfection in a bluray?
are the faults noticable in general running of the film?

the only blu rays i can honestly say have been perfect are Monsters Inc and MAYBE Planet Earth, otherwise it hasn't been amazing anyway

That's the worst analogy ever!!

If you haven't been impressed with Blu-ray then I have to assume you fall under the following:

1. Have a poor eye for PQ
2. Have a poor AV set-up
3. Haven't seen that many Blu-ray discs

That is indeed a poor analogy. A better one would be buying a famous painting and then finding out you have a poor copy. You'll still keep it cos normal people can't tell the difference, right? :whistling:

I just found the screencap comparison between the 4HD Gladiator broadcast and the US Blu-Ray and WOW... No words can describe what an epic FU Paramount made. Disappearing arrows and amazingly bad EE. The 4HD version looks a lot better in my eyes.

Quote from post #19:

"The extended edition stuff looks great, by all accounts"

That will explain why I didn't think it to be bad.....Still haven't had a chance to fire up my proper AV system as the wife has decided to take off a few days holiday and has me 'otherwise engaged!'

Ltd Edition Steelbook turned up yesterday - watched it last night.

After reading the reviews in advance I tried to spot the problems suggested but to me it looked great. It's notably better than the Superbit edition I have.

Picture quality aside though, the DTS-HD MA soundtrack is staggering.
