Much cheaper than at the 'German Christmas Market', and a world away from low-alcohol, choke-on-the-clove-flavour, mouth-shrinking, heartburn-inducing supermarket mulled wine.

This is the real deal: 9% ABV, a good level of spicing without being overpowering and very moreish.

One of the real 'tastes of Christmas' (along with those 'just one more' Pfeffernüsse biscuit/cake things that you eat until your teeth ache). Germans, eh? They know how to do Christmas.

I should have said - it's a 1 Litre bottle, too.

Heat as compared to supermarket offerings it is indeed good stuff.

They were charging people £4 a 'mug' (quite apt description) for this at the local forest when we picked up the Christmas tree last year.
Got two bottles from Aldi last week - also picked up a bottle of the 'spiced apple' stuff as well which is surprisingly nice!

Edit: Added 'Heat' as it's supposed to be served hot - lol

Had some in Germany this weekend in Dortmund. A small cup was enough but great to share to get in the mood!

Pfffft, you're missing a trick - gluhwein mit schuss is where it's at!
Mmmmmmm......intoxicating.

Based on the recs here, I'm off to Aldi to give this a...err...shot. :-)

The price is a scandal. In Vienna recently and standard supermarket price for exactly the same brand (750ml), in plastic bottle was 1.49 euro (£1.25). Brought a couple of bottles back.

The UK mark up is obscene!!!

Let the Christmas cheer begin! Hic...

For a tiny bit extra it's much better to make your own. Or you could buy the Schwartz mulled wine mix (think you get six sachets for around a quid). Then throw in anything you might have in the kitchen - oranges, ginger, that kind of thing.

Add a cheap bottle of red (Toro Loco from Aldi is great at £3.49) and it comes to roughly same price, except it's much better. Plus it makes your house smell great as you make it!

And that.

I had it with rum in at a Xmas market last week. Really good.

I'll look out for this...though as there's a Xmas Market just around the corner from my local Lidl I have a sneaky suspicion they'll have been snapped up!

heat just for the description !

It's not mark up, it's duty.

+1 for adding shots, except make mine an Amaretto

50p cheaper than our lidl too!

50p cheaper than Lidls

Use a slow cooker for this, rice cooker might work too.

What % alcohol is this please?

The Glühwein from Lidl is good too, and their Stollen is just the best!

It says in the description, 9%.

£1 for 1 litre of 9% alcohol is pretty amazing value...similar to a four pack of lager! Alchies should be all over this!

It certainly is, but sadly that's not the deal. It's £4.49.

Some bloke was selling cheap Christmas cake down the pub yesterday. I thought about buying some, but I was afraid it might be stollen.

That UK 'mark up' is YOUR government mugging you for the difference.

You are totally correct, but £2 of the price here is tax, plus there is transport to get it here, so weighing all that up, it's about the price you would expect.. It's a litre here and in a glass bottle too.

This and Rum for a litre in asda for 15 Quid.

The good stuff is only £0.80p in Germany

Mind you the in the UK the duty (+ vat on the duty) comes to £3.28.

What is it with people complaining about "cheaper elsewhere"? It used to be "cold, it's not available down the road" but now there are complaints it's cheaper in Austria or Germany! Well done OP, seems like a good deal and certainly the best this side of the North Sea!

Whoops...hic...had a few too many bottles already and it was barely past lunch time when I posted that. Hic. Don't tell the boss.

This is tempting! What's it like compared to making it at home with cheap plonk and Schwartz mulled wine spices? Better? Might have to test them both out... Just for scientific purposes of course!

Time to get Mullered !!!

Is there a lidl equivalent for us without Aldi?

I was gutted last year whilst in Spain, I wanted some Old Rosie but had to pay £13.65 for 4 bottles, I repeatedly wrecked the joint at the liberty in being taken by the asking price...........................

Until you warm it up and the alcohol evaporates - really!

I bought it in Asda last week, same 1l bottle for £4.50 - might be useful for those without Aldi nearby. Also online:

You can get it from Asda (also online) for 1 pence more.

Cold as it's not at a German Market enjoying a social drink and lapping up the atmoshere

Another overrated product by the Aldi customers. Tesco, sainsburys, m&s and asda supermarkets have all been reviewed as better than this and it seems Aldi like to increase the price of its alcohol nearer to Christmas as this was £2.99 a few month ago. goodhousekeeping.co.uk/ins…ews

To be fair aldi stollen bites are the best and their gluhwein every year we stock up on both for the holidays
