Why? I have 2, similar, do a fantastic job and knocked the temp down during the heat wave.
For £5 these are fine so long as you're aware of the limitations of these swamp cooler designs.

If you're in any doubt then check out the multitude of youtube reviews on these things.

If you're expecting an airconditioner for £5 then you probably need to readjust you expectations.
I can almost see the potential if the tray can be filled with ice completely (put directly into freezer) but seems like a faff if have to put ice cubes in it. How long would a tray of ice cubes last roughly?

This includes some ice packs I believe.

I didn't buy one but that's what it made out on the packaging.

Yeah you can see the side of the box. Freezable tanks.

If this is the same as the different branded but identical looking one I have then the two transparent sides are water packs that you can simply freeze once you have filled them. The downside is that you can't really use it whilst waiting for the packs to freeze. Although at this price, buy two, problem solved.

Well spotted. Thanks.
Hmm, just been reading user reviews of a black and decker unit. Several times more expensive than this one but wanted to get a feel for what you get for the money. The B&D one looks much more refined, but they included a cheap nasty fan inside which emits a whine. Full of reviews complaining about it and one reviewer even swapped out the fan which fixed the issue. So if a much more expensive unit has cheap and nasty distracting components I'm wary of taking a punt on this one. How is the fan noise

I didn't buy one but you can tell from the photos it's just a PC fan.

However, it runs from 5V USB so can't imagine it being too loud.

For £5, I would expect the worst. I'd imagine that the fan will either be noisy to begin with, or will get markedly more noisy over time. At £5, this is entirely disposable and would treat it as such. If you get more than 1 season out of this, I'd be surprised.

If you want to spend less than £5 and have something of comparable performance but quieter, then just use an old ice-cream tub, any branded 120mm PC fan and a wire the connections to a USB plug. That'll be very much in the spirit of a proper swamp cooler!

Just check out the vids on youtube. There's very little skill involved in making one of these; they're the ultimate low-tech solution.

Why
I wish people would actually give a reason to why they say stuff like that

They make the air very slightly cooler by evaporating the water on the paper fins. However, this makes the room it's operating in more humid and hence more difficult for your body to cool. This is negated if the air in the room is very dry. You are better off aiming a regular fan at a large bottle/s of frozen water. This cools the room far more effectively and doesn't make the room humid. The paper fins also need to be sterilised regularly (or ideally replaced IF you can get spares) as they are ideal places for bacteria to breed and the fan spreads them.

I had two of these bought at the same time, it is a different variant. After a few weeks of usage they both started to smell like fish!

Agree! And mine started to smell like a fish market after a few weeks
