What is it?: A cheap way to turn your android phone into a VR headset. All you need to do is put your phone into the carboard enclosure and fire up the Google Cardboard App.

What can you do with it?

• Earth: Fly where your fancy takes you on Google Earth.
• Tour Guide: Visit Versailles with a local guide.
• YouTube: Watch popular YouTube videos on a massive screen.
• Exhibit: Examine cultural artifacts from every angle.
• Photo Sphere: Look around the photo spheres you've captured.
• Street Vue: Drive through Paris on a summer day.
• Windy Day: Follow the story (and the hat) in this interactive animated short from Spotlight Stories.

I've been really wanting to try one of these, and even though it's cardboard, most of the kits I've seen online are still £15-20. So this seems like a great, inexpensive way to try something new.

Explanation from Google's page:

Virtual reality on your smartphone
We want everyone to experience virtual reality in a simple, fun, and inexpensive way. That's the goal of the Cardboard project.Virtual reality has made exciting progress over the past several years. However, developing for VR still requires expensive, specialized hardware. Thinking about how to make VR accessible to more people, a group of VR enthusiasts at Google experimented with using a smartphone to drive VR experiences.

The result is Cardboard, a no-frills enclosure that transforms a phone into a basic VR headset, and the accompanying open software toolkit that makes writing VR software as simple as building a web or mobile app.

By making it easy and inexpensive to experiment with VR, we hope to encourage developers to build the next generation of immersive digital experiences and make them available to everyone.

I think that is most people's first reaction when they hear about this, but the more you look into it the more you see that this is a really fun and exciting idea by google

How big is your phone? The page says it's suitable for 4-7 inch screen phones?

It should be fine then (note - I'm pretty sure the page is saying 4 to 7 inch screen phones, not 4.7 inch phones! because most flagships are 5 inches or over these days!)

Nice that they've included a rubber band along with the cardboard. But will you have to send to China for spares if your rubber band snaps?
Edited by: "ianidall" 29th Jul 2014

Are you effing serious? Im not paying 6 quid for a piece of cardboard with.... damnit i bought one.

It works out as £6.07 each if paying by PayPal! Still ordered 2 though as im a gadget geek and just gotta try this out lol

In the pack list what are the Magnets for ? ....I'd be wary about putting 'Magnets' anywhere near my phone....lol

Hi have the Google version, which is shipped from China. It is great, I can use it to watch movies, YouTube videos and you can get the Google app to get demo tours around galleries and so on.

This is cheap, as I paid $20, but I still think its worth it. Mine has a small magnetic button and NFC to pause or select content and allow the phone to recognise when its inserted into the cardboard VR headset.

I don't use it much, but I could watch a movie (on a plane) with this and a set of headphones, and it feels like I am in a cinema. It could be use with 3D content, but I dont use it for this.

Enjoy.

they bend the time/space continuum when used in conjunction with the rubber band I'd imagine - a very versitile piece of technology which pushes the boundaries of both design and theoretical physics all-in-one

The magnet serves as a 'button', so you move it a little bit, and the phone registers the change and register that as a click. You can see it at 2.30 on this vid: youtube.com/wat…4oU

this looks awesome!

i think i am going to buy a set! cheers op

tbh whats wrong with it? Is your problem the fact its a cardboard rather then plastic surround? Its fine for a holiday no? I mean its cheap and disposable, kind to the environment. You can make a camera out of a cardboard box so why not.

The non-cardboard version (considerable more cost but less tacky)

Thanks for the quick review when you say you have the 'google version' what do you mean? also, from what I've read, the NFC tag is optional since it is only used to automatically boot up the app when you insert the phone. But you could just easily just click on the app to fire it up manually. Is it used for anything else?

Also, how big is your phone? And can you confirm their claim that it would fit 4 to 7 inch screen phone? thanks very much

Naw - my problem is that it looks ludicrous in it's entirety - that you tube video had me in stitches alone, never mind the notion of a live performance by someone on a plane

I think the problem with making your own is that you have to source the correct lens type, magnets etc. (And for me the fact that I am awful at anything practical, and can't be bothered haha).

Anyone know if the Cardboard app is going to work on the Nexus 7 2012 model as it currently says incompatible?

Actually yes you're right, does seem a bit of a task trying to get all the extra bits, for 53p more you can get a kit that also includes an NFC chip and a 'case' lol

I saw that, but it doesn't mention the 2 magnets in the list? So that one has no magnets, but has NFC chip instead?
The magnets are more essential than the NFC, so I think the one in this deal is better

Did you manage to watch a 3d movie using this? e.g. avatar

I paid £12.08, magnet doesnt work with Galaxy S3 so you cant select things. The best apps are the Tusan House and the VR Toilet ( although you cant play without a wirless controller - I think there was one for 20 quid earlier in the week)

Indeed, I don't see the problem. The person wearing it won't have to catch a glimpse of the bell next to him who is keeping a eye on what they are doing.

Bought with paypal but didn't receive any email confirmation. Anyone else order with paypal? how long did it take to process?

And they say that Apple fanboys will buy anything with an Apple logo on it...
Bloody Google Fanboys!

Brill, gotta love Google for coming up with this kind of stuff!

Is this the genuine Google one or a knock off copy?

It does not look as substantial as the Google one I saw in their promotional video or the reports of it from the recent tech show.

Damn that is cheap. i have one on order from the DoDoCase Company because it was cheaper (inc shipping!) that the lenses alone in the UK. The DoDo Version uses high quality glass lenses rather than resin so clarity should be better but I am amazed they were able to get any lenses included for £6. I might order one as an extra set. There is no 'genuine google one'. Google posted the designs and they posted all the components you need for it, but you can't actually buy from google. They posted some links to source the parts individually to make it yourself, but most of the parts are sold out now and works out much more expensive
