You would've thought these would have dropped in price over the years. Still, they're almost vital to a good entertainment experience.

Agreed, Plex + Chromecast is a great setup for most people
Same in asda
Same at JL with 2 years warranty..
I have the 1st generation and can't say I use it much, is this a big upgrade on that one?
Not 4k
Also ao.com with free next day local collection, and 1% topcashback
Think they had this same price in John Lewis Cheltenham earlier today (although I did not pay much attention to which gen it was so not 100 % certain)
For some reason my chromecast doesnt transmit Dolby digital from Netflix to my tv. My tv passes Dolby through fine from my ps4 and ps3 through to my sound system, but everything on chromecast comes up as LPCM.

I read somewhere this is due to the fact that Netflix carries Dolby Digital Plus but I dont know how true that is.

Also it does not accept Dolby or DTS via casting from other devices, which in this day and age is plain nuts.

If only you didn't need the computer on too for the Plex server 🙃

Can you stream sky go from phone or ipad to TV? Sorry, never used this before, any info appreciated

Not 4k

Yep as it's not the 4K version for 20 quid, who would of thought.

4K five year old technology. Wouldn’t bother with this even for £20

Invest in a Synology disk station. My server is on 24/7 and sips on electricity.

You are absolutely right but you cannot compare a chromecast to that. This is £20 an d the shield starts at £149.99. 2 different products that both do what they do really well. If your on a budget it's a quick and cheap way to add decent smart capabilities.

I think you missed his point, he was talking about a nas server, how are you going to run it on this £20 chromecast, you're not,
Just a warning. Argos can sell used items as new. I collected a home mini yesterday and it was opened already with a sticker on it saying checked by Argos.

Suppose it depends on why you didn't use it much. If it was due to it being too slow, then this makes a sensible upgrade. However, if you're like me and never found a use for it, then there's be no point upgrading for a newer faster version.

I plug my Chromecast in to my AV receiver which passes the picture to the TV. Your setup seems to have everything plugged in to the TV and passes the sound to your sound system.

If you can, you could try you plug your Chromecast into your sound system (depending of course on what system you have). Might be with a shot.

I have access to 2 Plex servers and due to transcodes (the file having to be converted to play on the CC) they have banned them.

A firestick is a much better purchase imo. All apps on the device so easier for kids to use and a fantastic remote with volume buttons as well. No transcodes on Plex as well with the Amazon devices.

Not missed the point...totally understand the post and the Nas server...but think you're missing my point lol..

2 totally different products, totally different prices, totally different end users.

Both great products but it's like comparing a Ferrari with a smart car...they both ultimately do the same thing but are very different vehicles with totally different users

Merry Xmas

You clearly have as someone mentioned running a plex server, so if you did want to run one you would need this and then a server, the shield does both, so if its plex you want to run and chromecast he gave you the best option, , and please stop using lol its embarrassing, merry Christmas

I use a Firestick far more than Chromecast. I have a 6 year old TV which has some apps built in but is much slower than a Firestick. The Media Server app on the TV is useful for accessing my Synology DiskStation though.

It was in response to the Plex comments, I wasn't comparing Chromecast to the shield, just mentioning that if Plex is a desired then the shield is an all in one option.

Have to agree. Over the years I have had 3 or 4 items that were obviously not new. The last item was a coffee machine and when I got it home it had coffee grinds / water in it. It had been returned and just put into stock. I would certainly open up and check certain items before wrapping as Christmas presents.

Its when people use it as a full stop , its just another of my pet hates, i have many, happy xmas mate.
Beware no 4k indeed
I’ve got one and I use it for one reason only, so I can tell Google to stream the Nest Camera on the front of my house or garden if I want to see what is going on. Apart from that I don’t really have any other use for it. I got mine in Asda a couple of weeks back for £16, a friend used his staff discount

No, it aint built in, you could ask googlehome to play something from Netflix on your TV, but you'll still need to use the app to find content. Shame it doesn't bring up on screen suggestions like YouTube does.

I do not know much about these. Can I stream from my Mac whilst still using my mac?
