Chromecast represent amazing value for people who already have a TV and a smartphone. Chromecasts are also very unreliable and unpredictable. If you want a simple way to watch TV buying something with a remote (and a similar cost) like the Roku or Firestick would be my go to.

I wouldn't say unreliable, but they need decent USB power supply. I had some very strange behaviour from mine running off the USB port on the TV, switched to the mains adapter it came with and it's been fine since.

Worth a try for one of mine but the problems I was referring to were things like apps not being able to locate the Chromecast or finding the Chromecast but never producing the video or the Chromecast receiving the app (displaying the splash screen/logo) but never following through with a video.

If you ever want to jump straight into watching something a remote is the surest way to do that.

The best thing about the Chromecast for me is that I can ask GA to play something but GA is... A different load of problems.

I know 5 people with a chromecast as I've recommended them over the years and never had a problem with anyone's, unless your stating this is an issue with new chromecasts?

For 4k it might be cheaper with a Firestick bow but the last time I used those products was years ago and they were utter garbage.

How can you claim that?? If I want to watch my TV programs when I am abroad (iplayer, other catchup tv, netflix, amazon... etc.) using VPN, then how would you propose I do so with the crippled chromecast? I would normally use my Firestick with no problems whatsoever. Also can you access IPTV using chromecast or be able to view your IP webcam?

I was replying to someone else about the chromecast being unreliable? Did you read the message or are you just looking for an argument?

2nd and 3rd gen work with 5ghz wi-fi and I have found the 3rd gen (I got for £20 direct from Google a few weeks ago) to be noticeably quicker when loading/switching apps.

Thanks.
Tempted with one for guest mode, from what I have seen no WiFi needed to cast to. This will help while I am away in hotels to stream movies to the TV screen.

Has anyone tried it? Does it work ok?

Would this cast from an iPhone to the tv?
Is this the latest generation one? I've tried to use zwift on my tv by casting my phone to the built in chromecast feature on my Sony TV (3 year old TV) and its quite kaggy. Would this be better?

Don't rely on it for Hotels - if the hotel has a portal to sign into or any non-consumer WiFi encryption, it won't work. A fire stick for the most part will as it has a web browser

Yes - compatible apps (YouTube, NowTv, iPlayer) have a button that lets you send video the Chromecast.
Does any one know if you can cast BT Sports, the mobile one that you get free with a BT mobile plan to this?

Thanks, I am talking about using it slightly different. Using my phone as the streaming device and casting to the device plugged in the TV with no WiFi connected.

Those are issues I've had with the first gen Chromecasts and the current gen and there are more issues with the one built in to my Philips TV but I suppose Google can't shoulder the full blame for that.

You've never opened an app and had the Chromecast logo not appear? You've never sent a video and had nothing happen? These are things that only happen to me and not you and your five mates? Seems unlikely.

There's no doubt there are faulty chromecasts somewhere but why would Google put out such an unstable product?

I'm mostly using YouTube and Netflix most of the time. These are big apps with probs a lot of support, so no I don't have issues with no logos or videos not appearing etc.

If you have a decent TV set you can switch your TV on with the chromecast, also the casting button is always on everytime I watch a YouTube video for ease of access.

There are a few things to take in to consideration, having a decent TV set, decent Internet connection and also the apps your using are going to make a difference.

All 3 of my Chromecasts are faulty? The Chromecast audios have the same problem too, three of them aswell.

I'm glad you've not had an issue with yours but to the initiated who want an easy way to watch catch-up TV an old school physical remote and user interface would be my recomendation.

Tech companies are constantly putting out unstable products, by the way. We are all essentially buying beta versions. The first Google Mini has a button on top that was disabled via firmware. Samsung sold a few of those Fold phones with a screen people could peel off. Google are a big company but they aren't run by saints.

For some people might be better of course.
But I am genuinely very surprised about your chromecasts. Either way, you have a nice day.

I'm surprised you're surprised. This isn't an issue I've had once in a while. It's one I've had since the launch of the first Chromecast across the family of devices.
What my setup is that I have a working vpn on my phone in Spain. I’m hoping to cast bbc iPlayer, itv etc to my tv from an iPhone. Seems like this is a good option.
for some reason the vpn I subscribe to works on phone but not on the fire stick so I need an alternativ

Either try and sideload your vpn app to the firestick and see if it works or get a VPN router to create a WiFi point were all your devices can connect to like one of the Gl.iNet routers. The chromecast is DEFINITELY NOT whay you'd need for streaming services especially when a vpn is involved. What VPN do you use?

Only via "mirror screen" on device. Otherwise you have to pay extra to cast via app.

You can do that? Unless there is something majorly different with the 3rd gen version (I have the second gen) as I don't believe you can do that - the device downloads the content on the phones behalf over the WiFI.

Interesting, can't say I've tried for years. I just started using my FireTV instead (which has been a bit more feature rich anyway) but worth noting so cheers for that.
You_Ness20/01/2020 17:15

How?

That was the price. Free postage too. It's gone up to 30 now though. Keep an eye on it if you're not in a rush it'll be 20 again I guess
Saw them on the shelves in Asda for £20 the other day but got mine from JL when they were selling them for £20 as well. They frequently drop in price. Not worth the original price in my opinion given the better featured and specced alternative devices.
