What is Chromecast Audio?

Chromecast Audio is a small device that plugs into your speakers for streaming music over Wi-Fi. Once set up, simply use your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, Mac or Windows laptop or Chromebook to cast your favourite music, radio stations and podcasts to any speakers in the house.

Easily cast music to your speakers.
Tap the Cast button from your music apps to instantly play on the speakers. Play, pause and turn up the volume right from your phone, anywhere in the house.

Listen to your favourites, any time.
Millions of songs, radio stations and podcasts from apps like Spotify, Google Play Music and other favourites. Discover more at chromecast.com/audio.

Cast any audio from your Android phone or Chrome browser.
Hear anything playing on your Android phone or tablet on your speakers. Cast any music streaming website from your laptop through Chrome.

Higher quality sound.
Enjoy your favourite artists the way they were meant to be heard. Chromecast streams straight from the cloud so you get continuous high-quality sound, even when you leave the room.

Enjoy your music without interruption.
Casting will not drain your battery or get in the way of other activities. Answer a call, surf the web, even leave the room, all without interrupting your music.

Plug in and listen.

Amazing price for an amazing device! I strongly recommend to buy a spdif to optical cable especially if your hifi system has a spdif slot! Huge improvement on the sound compared with the cable included in box
Don't forget 3.2% Quidco folks. Just found this myself, want to make an old amp streaming-capable.
Can I use this with my Home Max to change TV Channels and then cast music to my Home Max speakers or do they only cast sound. I have a normal Chromecast but it will not cast sound to my speakers. Do these each work one way (Chromecast - receive and Chromecast Audio - transmit) if so does anyone know if I can use them on the same devices (Home Max and TV)?

You can cast to a chromecast audio, the same as you would to a normal chromecast. These can’t broadcast sound for other devices to pick up.

They are Audio Chromecast! They will cast sound only! People connect these beauties to make the old hifi system a 'smart' system! Means they will be able to cast sound from tablets, phones, etc to your hifi system!
I have it connected to an old onkyo amp, and with voice command on my android I say 'play Iron Maiden (example)on home speakers' If set up correctly it will play through Spotify (or the streaming app you are using) straight to your speakers, not phone!
Why is it good??? It uses wifi, not Bluetooth! More stable and if you receive a call or a text on your phone, it will NOT stop the music

Hi there,

I got one of these a while ago and love it, but the only audio output mine appears to have is a 3.5" headphone jack type?

Thanks Mark.

Hi there,

I think I've sussed it as didn't realise the fiber optic was built into the same and only port as the 3.5' jack?

Just wondering if this can play into a standard optical port of an amp as somebody online said the Chromecast Audio doesn't have it's own DAC or something?

Been looking and would it be a TOSLINK digital optical cable?

Thanks.

Mark, no! Its optical output! It looks the same but it's slightly smaller! When I bought it, I threw away the cable from the box and bought a spdif to optical ( toslink called sometimes) from Amazon! So you can connect the optical end to Chromecast and spdif to your amp!

Those are idiots! The Chromecast has an integrated DAC....How can it convert digital sound if it wouldn't?? Toslink or spdif to optical!! Same thing! Buy it on amazon, ebay, Currys..up to you

OK thanks for that.

I thought it was just analogue.

Erm...the Chromecast has a half decent DAC built-in and the supplied cable or a 3.5mm to two phono cable will use it. If you use optical it will bypass the DAC and use the one in your amp which is not always better!

You are absolutely right! I only answered that it has a DAC:) Let's face it...for £30 (how it was originally) and £19( how it costs now) it's more than enough

Indeed, always been very cheap for what it offers, but also very underrated...particularly the quality of the DAC
