Currys currently running 50% off the marked price of selected clearance products instore, one of which is the Google Chromecast Audio. Marked up at £13.97, but 50% off bringing the price down to £6.99.

Visited the Coatbridge store today who still had a good few left in stock and verified other stores also have plenty of stock.

Great device. Bonehead move on Google's part to discontinue. If anything I bought more Google devices after owning the Chromecast audio (my first Google accessory)

Google is a shitty company that sometimes makes good stuff for a while, before making bad decisions

I can imagine Google might not want to keep supporting them as speakers in the Google home app? That's how I use them, as a Sonos alternative

This is a great price, however not many will be lucky to find it. Visited Currys in Sheffield after a deal on Chromecast was posted, about 3 months ago, they told me last time they had Chromecast in stock was about a year ago. Voted hot anyway, was good even at £14, never mind half price!

They are constantly messing with the code, backends, security etc. of all their devices and for the most part this is transparent to the end user. Thus these devices are never about remaining on the code that left the factory as it was in the old days.

I knew they weren't selling these devices anymore but didn't realise they had ended support. I'll have to do some digging.

"OK Google, play Radio X on house" ..... "Ok playing Radio X from Tune in on house" ....... <silence> generally on the 3rd attempt it works. Used to work fine.

Edit : Can't find anything definitive over the exact end of support date on these and given they announced the end of sales in Jan then I'd expect them to support them for a couple of years after that, if not longer. Also the rumour is the new mini 2 to be released later this year will have an aux out, thus sort of replacing the need for the cc audio albeit in a bigger package and I'm not sure if it will have digital out. To be honest the feature that I find is missing from the cc audio is the smart speaker function.

It's not just about the hardware though - Google has a history of messing with software and breaking compatibility.

They've slowly been removing casting support from their products (Chome for example). They've also stopped the ability to send audio from Youtube videos to this device on iOS: reddit.com/r/g…io/

I'm a heavy Google user, but I'm under no illusion that they slowly kill products by 'updating' things / no including features in future releases that work fine.

Seems a steal. Bought a cheap Bluetooth dongle to do the same thing. Quality is poor and connection drops out when I leave room. This seems far better.

One of these at chicken feed money, cheap micro amp off amazon/fleabay and you can breath life in to any old massive 2000w floor standing speakers and run a full streaming set up rave / discotheque style!!

I thought all cc devices had to be part of the google home app as that is where you configure them. Mine are working ok through all the apps that support cc although I tend not to cast yt.

That's the same thing I have to do to cast youtube to google home mini speakers, so not just for chrome cast audio. Annoying , but probably because youtube is classified to be video not just audio.
