What is Chromecast Audio?

Chromecast Audio is a small device that plugs into your speakers for streaming music over Wi-Fi. Once set up, simply use your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, Mac or Windows laptop or Chromebook to cast your favourite music, radio stations and podcasts to any speakers in the house.

Funny how this is half price again but never do the same for the Chromecast 2. Maybe the audio version isn't very popular. Hot either way!
I really can't justify a fifth! But hot.
went to check if amazon price matched deal, and found out amazon wont stock google products
Could I plug this into speakers from a CD player? (CD player part is broken but radio and speakers still work) How is the Chromecast powered?
Fantastic, just been looking for one of these!
to those who already have this or know a lot more about this - does this amplifies the sound and so use it will standalone speaker that are not connected to amplifiers?

If your CD/Radio has some sort of auxiliary input then yes. The Chromecast Audio comes with a 3.5mm jack, your unit may also have a red/white stereo input in which cause you would need to get an adapter/cable that fits.

The Chromecast is powered by an included USB charger/cable similar to most phones.

If your CD player has some sort of audio in like 3.5mm line in or the red/white RCA ports, then yes. This outputs through a standard headphone port so just need the right cable.

It's USB powered and comes with a plug.

Thank you, both! I'll check them when I have a chance.
HOT!

I have one and it's great but before buying it I didn't realise is that to use chromecast audio with spotify and deezer you need to subscribe to their premium plans. Luckily I have 6 months free deezer premium+ plan (thanks to hukd!).

I think it was because Amazon wanted to push their Fire stick and thus dropped the chromecast range.

I know the fire doesn't do audio but I suppose if they dropped the chromecast media one they have to follow suit with the chromecast audio too.

Amazon won't stock it as it's a competitor to their own Amazon music service and kit like the Firestick. It's also worth pointing out Chromecast audio won't work with iTunes or Amazon music but supports most other music apps like Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn. Worth a punt for £15 if you use any of them.

This article is pretty helpful for anyone interested - cnet.com/uk/…io/

You need a radio/speakers etc with an aux inlet.
You need wifi in the area.
You need an extra plug socket.
You need a phone/tablet which can support the chromecast app (sounds obvious but my dad's phone doesn't support it despite being android based).

The also removed Apple TV. They don't include any devices that don't support Amazon Video/Prime Video.

You will need some sort of amp for this. They are available on Amazon for £20 or sohere
Anyone got any real life experience of this product and if so is it worth it? I have a Bluetooth thing similar to this which attaches to my hi-fi, use every , it's fantastic. I know the sound quality will theoretically be better.

How does it work with a modern smartphone with say Poweramp. Thanks

It's easy and all done through the chromecast app on your phone/tablet.

I recently bought 2 of these and just bought 2 more today. They are brilliant. You can link them together and move from room to room and they are in perfect sync, sound quality is great and I find them much more reliable than bluetooth connections. I also googled and found a website where you can play music files from your PC to any chromecast enabled device. My kids love it for streaming music from youtube from their phones to their stereo's and to mine ! Not sure if poweramp supports chromecast yet. But google music and youtube do.

Question to any of you experts please:

1. Does this allow you to connect your iPhone via the chromecast to your hi-if?
2. Does this support apple music? (I'm not sure if it does)

Thanks
I bought one of these last time they were at £15, and it's great! I've connected it up to my surround sound, and we listen to music when friends are over.

I've just bought another to connect to my radio in the kitchen, as I've recently lost Planet Rock with the retune. Chromecast Audio + TuneIn Radio = Rock Kitchen!

Personally I'd stick with the Bluetooth, the sound quality between Bluetooth and chromecast is marginal in my experience and the biggest benefit is that with Bluetooth you don't have to pay for the premium accounts on spotify or deezer.

Had I known this deezer & spotify will only work with chromecast when you pay for the subscription premium accounts I would probably have just upgraded my radio/dock system and stuck with Bluetooth like my other system uses.

You'll set up the device using the Chromecast app for iOS or Android. The main work involves giving your device a name, and entering the credentials for your Wi-Fi network. Chromecast Audio supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and is compatible with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands

I agree. I've had 4 running for a number of months now. Use Google Play music which I think it s great. The multi room works well - fab to have the whole house playing music - and when you move room to room it's seamless.

1. Yes, as long as your Hi-Fi has some kind of Audio-In
2. No, unfortunately not.
found out what I wanted to know from the above link, sounds great. I was wondering if Amazon would price match it but of course they don't even sell it. Amazon are such greedy halfwits I virtually never bother with Amazon prime video because I can't cast it. Not to mention you only get a couple of series free and they will pay for the rest.

1) with the chromecast app you can link your phone to the hifi to stream music, audio from YouTube etc. if you have an aux inlet. I don't think it works with the call function if that's what you're asking?!

2) don't know for sure but I don't think so.
