Still alot cheaper than some of the ridiculous overpriced second-hand units on eBay.😁

A normal Chromecast will only go up to Hifi, an Audio will play Masters
Reading their site it talks about serial numbers 'Note: This Refurbished product is supplied in Frustration Free Packaging only (not boxed) and does not include a Power Plug Adapter. Please also note that due to it's refurbished status all serial numbers have been removed, this does not affect your six month warranty period with us, MyMemory. '

It is so that people dont contact google with problems only Mymemory

More likely is that they are not allowed to sell them and that these were never meant to go back on the market. Companies sell refurbs all the time and they never remove the serial numbers. The serial numbers normally show if a product has been refurbished or not and companies will always want them on there as it shows the history of the product. I don't think there's any good reason for the serial numbers to be removed. Also, many people online found some of these units with scratched off serials they received from MyMemory didn't work in the UK and were for a different country / language...

Audio doesn't play masters, only hifi. Doesn't it?

Had a look and it's not clear, some say yes others no
By masters do you mean MQA tracks? If you do then the audio Chromecast doesn't support it I think. What I've read, the DAC must be licensed to render the track/file and this is connected from the DAC by a USB cable rather than optical as the Chromecast audio provides. A laptop or something much more expensive I'm afraid would be needed.

I think this will depend on the dac used on the device playing the file when using the digital out via toslink on the chromecast, if it's mqa enabled it should do the unfolding?
It definetly won't if you allow the chromecast dac to convert the digital information

After some Googling it seems if the music is higher bitrate PCM or DSD, the throughput of USB is needed. I'm off to try this as I've just bought a Pro-ject DAC and headphone amp and I'm using a CC audio with it until I can afford a Node 2i.

Yes, there's lots of conflicting information but in theory if the chromecast doesn't process the digital stream and it's fed unaltered to an mqa capable dac then it should work should it not?

I'm sorry to report that only MP3 files would stream from my phone to CC audio. None of the lossless material played, not only MQA but FLAC either. I was confronted by a message asking me to upload the file to Play Music rather than streaming it from my phone's memory. It may different for streaming from Tidal though but direct from smartphone does not work.

The stream doesn't actually come from your phone, tidal is only controlled by your phone, the stream is directly to the chromecast. Sounds like you're doing something quite different streaming from your phone to the chromecast.

Yes I am aware of that, hence why I differentiated between the two methods. Good luck but I really have doubts that it will work.
CC audio will play red book 16b/44k over WiFi to its optical output completely unadulterated (i.e. it's as good as a Sonos!). I wouldn't bet on it play much more than that. I wouldn't recommend its analogue output either, there's little to no power supply filtering in there so it can be very noisy depending on what you supply it with.
You can use one as a cheap renderer (into a good dac) in a squeezebox system quite seamlessly. But then you can buy used squeezeboxes for not much more than this and then you get HD audio out and good quality analogue for free.
I wouldn't bother with MQA personally, so I don't care whether it's supported or not.. (it's not).
