Is there much difference between this and the 2nd Gen Chromecast?

Very little. I don't believe there are any feature improvements since the second gen is still getting updates but it is slightly faster, more of a refresh really.

I wouldn't say it's worth an upgrade unless you were on a 1st gen (they were very slow and weaker WiFi).

I wish the 4k version was more reasonably priced.
Can't believe the Ultra is still so expensive, Google need to half that now to get sales considering 4K is getting pretty much the norm on all TVs sold now

In case anyone was wondering; for now this isn't compatible with Google Stadia yet, 4K Chromecast Ultra is.
It was £15.00 last year
Just paid £20 for one on Gumtree only reason I use it us to stream the UFC Fight Pass
Am I right in thinking that even the 3rd gen Chromecast doesn't support H.265/HEVC video and that you do need the Chromecast Ultra for this?

Most likely. Google wants more of your money before you can relax and enjoy yourself.

I really want to watch BT sport but I have hyperoptic broadband. What is the cheapest option and would this device help?

Yeah, £30-35 would be fair.

Yeah it should be deffo, I don't get Googles thinking seeing the Firestick is only £49 retail, plus they get discounted on there offer events plus you can do alot more with them.

You don't necessarily need to use it on 4K TV.

Just needs HDMI, as it should step down to your device's needs.

But using it can help other devices that need 4K TV

It was absolutely fine as far as I remember. Many people didn't realise that HDMI extension cable had WiFi antenna built in and never used it. That's probably why the new Chromecasts come with HDMI cable/WiFi antenna permanently fixed.

Let go back to the past then

Not only that but 4K TVs are typically smart tvs with a lot of apps on them nowadays, so for the general consumer there's not going to be a huge advantage over OOTB offerings.
Discovered recently that these can be added to multi-room audio groups on Google Home if you have other Google Home/cast enabled speakers. Handy, especially if your tv is connected to a decent sound system.

Sorry, my grammar probably wasn't correct here. I meant to say the overall performance of the 1st gen Chromecast was very slow in comparison to the 2nd or 3rd gen. The WiFi was weaker on the 1st gen (no AC/5Ghz) which will be a problem for some.

So to clarify, should you upgrade to the 3rd gen? If on the 1st gen, yes. If on the 2nd gen, I wouldn't bother.
Would this do anything more than an Android box or would it be worth having if already have Android Box?

Mine came today. It does less than an android box. Doesnt come with a remote. Everything is done though the Google home app on your phone or tablet. You don't browse through menus on your TV like you would with a firestick etc, you cast everything from the app on your phone.
I've just been in to my nearest Argos and they're out of stock but the Sainsbury's that it's in / owned by has the storeroom about 5ft away and they've got 5 in stock but for £30. lol
