Turn any TV smart

Love to stream box sets on Netflix, watch the latest trending videos on YouTube, or listen to the newest releases on Spotify? Do all that and more on the big screen with Google Chromecast.

Simply plug the Chromecast into your TV and connect to your home WiFi to get started. From there you can cast straight from compatible apps, such as Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play. It's a great way to make any TV smart.

Streaming made simple

Each member of the family can stream straight from their smartphone, tablet,or PC, so there's no need to re-login to your accounts or share passwords. You don't need to put anything on pause either, as you can still use your phone as you normally would.

Improvements over 2nd gen from a review: expertreviews.co.uk/goo…ast

"The third-generation streamer has had a subtle redesign and now plays 1080p video at 60fps (in apps that support it) where its predecessor maxed out at 1080p 30fps. Google also claims it’s 15% faster than its predecessor, but with no 4K support, that’s just about the full extent of what’s new about the streaming device."

This any better then the 2nd generation?

From an online review, it's faster, but not necessarily better. As in, nothing new added. So if you've the 2nd gen already, not really worth it.
Available at Argos for £20 today a week early for Black Friday too.

From memory doesn't it have Bluetooth and 5ghz WiFi?
There isn't much extra to add to these - they'll just get faster/higher quality from now on.

I don't know

My second generation chromecast connects to 5ghz (thankfully) - not sure about Bluetooth.
My second gen freezes /overheats at least once every other week and requires a full unplug and restart. Will try 3rd gen at this price
Will this be lower coming in to black Friday/Christmas? Quidco currently have £2.50 bonus on so seriously considering this!
I've got a first gen that still basically works. Is this worth the upgrade?

I don't think I've seen them go for lower, especially with the QuidCo. I've bought mine through QuidCo link.

Depends on your mileage I would imagine. I upgraded a gen 1 to gen 2 and found it a significant upgrade in terms of stability and lag I was getting with gen 1. This would presumably be even more so.

So do you have lag/stability problems? If so it might be worth a punt, if not then it won't really do anything different.

I'm thinking the same. Now that I've got a smart TV, not sure how much I do need to cast stuff to make this £20 worth while.

I think for the price i would upgrade as i think jumping from v1 to v3 is a decent enough upgrade. you may not see massive benefits but for the £20, its a steal.

This is interesting considering the second gen is practically the same SoC but with half the memory of gen 1. Perhaps your specific unit had an issue.

If you've still warranty/guarantee, I'd sort it out or replace it.

I think it was mainly due to being able to use 5ghz WiFi as I was living in a flat block at the time so 2.4ghz was basically unusable due to having interference from literally 30+ other WiFi networks. We had two and both behaved the same and they were bought separately a month or two apart, so the odds they'd both be faulty are astronomically low.
Can I use the iptv app with this if this any better than the new fire stick ?
Thanks
Wasn't this posted yesterday in the Currys Black Friday deal thread?
What do you guys use it for apart from YouTube and spotift

My gen 1 doesn't really lag. I only used t for video and music and maybe the load time could be faster but it's not a big deal. The only thing I might upgrade for is multi room playback as I have several Google Homes. Though as I understand it, that feature isn't available yet and could even come to older models...

I wish these things had ethernet.
Hey guys

I have a v1 and sometimes when streaming BT Sport for example the quality sucks (yeah it could be the app or bandwidth). It does improve and is then fine. Just wondering if it's worth upgrading mine to v3.

Thoughts?

You can get an ethernet adaptor for it that plugs into the USB port. Works with all versions. The proper ones are about £12 but here's a different random brand one on Amazon for £6, can probably get them for £5.
