This seems to be the cheapest you can get the Chromecast Ultra (for now). It may be worth checking your clubcard vouchers to further reduce this.

Can someone advise me of where this could be useful. I can understand the normal one making standard HDTV's smart but as this would need a UHD TV surely such a TV would have the apps already built in.

This is essentially exactly the same as the Chromecast, except it performs better and supports 4K and HDR. Most UHD TVs will already have apps for this, but it all depends on whether the TVs interface is easy to use or whether it performs well.

I would recommend using a Chromecast if you have a home assistant such as Google Home; this allows you to control the Chromecast using your voice. Such as "Hey Google, play Stranger Things on Netflix", "Hey Google, play Logic on Spotify", etc.

Alternatively you can use your mobile phone or a personal computer to control the Chromecast with apps that support this, such as Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, etc.
Cheers Ben. Have a Google Home and a Samsung connected UHD TV. Just need to decide if I think the Chromecast Ultra integration with Home is better than the Samsung current interface. As the voice control is limited at the.moment I will probably stick with the TV apps.

UHD TV Smarts are almost all utterly garbage.

You can also use it with the google home to turn off and on the tv if you've misplaced the remote and control the volume. If you're happy with your current smart tv app then I dont think its worth it
has this ever been cheaper?
I bought a 4K projector (no smart tv like apps) and want something like this

Really? Is that just with the 4k version or should that work with the Gen 2 Chromecast as well?

Works on the Gen 2 version. Uses HDMI-CEC to communicate.
£40.38 from Google.com (USA site)
With a 4K Firestick going for £49 Google needs to man up! C'mon, show me some of that YouTube beef 🥩

Remember that if using gen 2, it must be plugged in to the wall (the ultra cannot be powered via USB like the gen 2 can), else once you've asked Google to turn off the TV, it won't be able to turn it back on.
The built in Google app on smart 4k tv's often doesn't actually stream in 4k on some of the latest models such as LG Webos 3.5....youd still need this for 4k streaming from Google play

Is that an identical product?
Tempted myself, my 4K sony has chromecast built in but it is limited compared to the actual dongle...
If don't have a 4k TV yet, will I notice any difference between this and the normal one? Speed or any other feature wise?

I've got the gen1 in the TV at the minute, but that's moving to the bedroom, and was going to get the new one.

Worth future proofing with the 4k?

Bit faster in general. Is slightly smoother for some sources that judder on the Gen1/2. Not enough to justify the cost over the standard version. I have started encoding media on my home server in H265 and that only plays on the Ultra, most of that is at 1080p and I find it worthwhile for that. If that doesn't interest you, there's no reason to get this.

That why we're here lol. I paid full price in the end, just wanted to try one. Something to point out is that it's not great compatibility wise with a lot of content you'll find online, particularly of the x265 variety. And, in Plex it's still seen as a standard Chromecast and is borderline impossible to get it playing anything x265 natively, I use a 3rd party app which works well but isn't anywhere near as slick as it should be. Self made encodes work great, anything else can be a really frustrating experience. Personally, not overly impressed by it.

what about for netflix 4K and youtube 4K?
all this piracy protection nonsense means I can't play 4K netflix from my laptop
I've had a lot of trouble with it. There's been a couple (at least) firmware releases that have broken both Netflix and YouTube 4K. Both seem ok now but it goes through periods of down-scaling which can be almost random sometimes. Apart from being told it's my WiFi (I know it's not that), I've not found any reason for this.
