The trick to using them is to find a list of the things it can do and then just think of the ones that are useful to you. It can do hundreds but clearly you're not going to need then all.

There are a lot I use, football scores, weather, timers, work schedules, broadcasts, heating. But probably the thing I use most is casting audio to it, which of course doesn't even need the smart element. But they are cheap enough to have plenty and you can set them up in groups.

E.g. Hey Google, play Christmas music on downstairs

and it fires up Spotify and cracks on. The fact I can request pretty much any song to play in any part of my house is still magic - bearing in mind the time I spent 20 years ago writing cassette tape inlay cards

You could also wire in Sonoff switches into your light fitting, if you’re just looking for on/off functionality.

Oh I didn't realise. However you can get a hue hub off ebay and then connect the ikea bulbs to the hue hub. It definitely works that way.
I was surprised how good these are. Quite loud too.
Isn't an Echo Dot 3rd gen simply better all round? (Genuine question)

Same price too.

I can’t believe how naive the people that buy these things are. Why do you think Google and Amazon are prepared to sell these devices so cheaply... because they’re collecting your data all the time for free to use and sell for advertising etc. Plus you’re increasing the risk of criminals obtaining the same information... but if you don’t mind every tom, dick and harry knowing your business then I guess it’s fine.

Pretty sure I'm aware the listening device that I bought to listen to me is listening. Not really sure what business it's going to know sitting in the kitchen on its own, playing the occasional music and setting timers. God forbid I told anyone that... Oh crap!

“Every” being every corporation and interested party that google or amazon choose to sell the data to and no I don’t... but I bet I could find out if I had the skills and wanted to

So do you not use Google, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, any debit or credit cards? News for you, every website is tracking you and selling your habits.

Maybe you work in the IT security arena, but I suspect there is more information out there on people than they realise due to simple usage of phones, tablets and pcs.

For instance..

What mobile phone do you us? Android or apple for instance. What email account did you register with that phone. Use a vpn with your phone? Have your location services turned off?
Use Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, yahoo etc
Ever buy anything from your phone using Google play or linked bank account?

Many won't have considered these questions, and frankly for many it's really not a concern. It's not for me. I know what I share and what I don't.

Sometimes using a vpn instills over confidence so its worth people taking the time to think about their IT device usage.

Not sure how Tom, Dick and Harry are going to get my data since I don't know a Tom Dick or Harry.

All jokes aside, this is a 2 way process.

Yes, Google takes your data and they use it to improve their services and offerings for consumers, and those consumers are the ones that buy the technology. People obviously want this technology, otherwise they wouldn't buy it. If nobody bought it, then the technology wouldn't exist are there would be no data to build the service from.

Then there's selling my data. Another inaccurate comment. They don't sell your data, they sell targeted advertising so people can target specific adverts to audiences that want it, nobody gets any information about you.

Again, a 2 way process. I don't like adverts as much as the next person, but what I dislike even more is having to see/watch/listen to adverts that have absolutely no connection to me at all. TV, Radio and Print are classic examples. Internet adverts - never seen one that doesn't apply to me.
Can I use this with old Google Nexus 7?

Amazon uses Bing's search engine, Google (unsurprisingly) uses Google. I wouldn't dream of using Bing in a browser. I've got one of the Google ones with a screen, and since it integrates with Youtube (the Amazon one doesn't) it's a far better range of devices in my opinion. Appreciate this is just the basic one, but once you go down one route you'll be likely to buy further devices....

Tor ain’t gonna save you and if you think you aren’t being traced in any way cuz you’re ‘safe’, who is being Naive now? Unless you live out in the sticks, use only cash, Hunt and farm for your food , live only off the land and complete self sustaining, have no job and travel no where, you are being traced/leave trails/tracks in one way or any other. Fact!

Anyone that says google sells your data then tells others to do their research can probably be safely set to ignore.
