Yesterday a man knocked on my door and asked if he could stand quietly in the corner of my room and record every word my family spoke and upload it to a server
I said no thats stupid, and stupid of you to ask such a stupid thing, my family's conversations are private.....
But no one thinks anything of allowing a microphone attached to the internet to sit there quietly.

To wake these devices up, you have to give a command "Ok Google" or "Alexa",
But for the voice commands to work, the hubs need to be "LISTENING" for this command !
So they are listening all the time, 24/7.
And every word is stored.
Why do you think they are so cheap, its because they make more money from the information they gather .

£10 yesterday from currys so this don’t seem very good as it’s refurb also

Fair enough, in my opinion, still a good price.

Can you find one?
I actually like refurbs as it’s been thoroughly checked, as opposed to the whiz bang lottery of factory.
Can we assume a new model is coming out or is google home dead now?
Alexa has basically become the preferred choice for many.
I personally think google missed the boat and should have given theirs a name like Alexa. Asking google just doesnt have the same ring.

Does anyone know if the Google nest is any good and worth buying? Received an email from my work and they're selling them for £29 as an employee deal which seemed a good deal considering they're normally £79

If Google want to give me recommendations for tea tonight, I'm all ears, I hate thinking about what to have to eat at tea time

So presumably your computer, or phone don't have microphones ?
My laptop is off unless i need to use it, and yes agreed, my phone listens to every word, ive written many posts regarding this, especially Instagram.
But my phone is essential, a Google hub isnt.
And at night i turn my phone off, as does my mrs

I didn't mean to be rude, just making a point, everything you do technology wise is tracked and stored. E.g. your ISP tracks all searches, android knows pretty much all you do on your phone. But I also take the point a hub is not an essential device

We had 'Alexa' for a couple of years and then it stopped working with my 'Harmony hub', all Amazon would say was it was a known issue and didn't know if or when it would be sorted. I then changed to Google and have not had any problem since. Google assistant IMO is much better with voice commands than Alexa was.

Fine as long as you don't want it for video calls as it doesn't have a camera. You need the much more expensive version or a Lenovo Smart Display for that.

Loads of reviews of these things on YouTube if you're unsure.

I was under the impression you can call it what you like by changing the "Ok Google" command to say "yabbadabbadoo" and it will respond..
I hate to sound like a fan boy for Google but I put my Alexa in the cupboard.
Google seems to have nailed the key points for me.

Google recently introduced privacy controls in response to mounting consumer worries about data privacy. Now, the speaker will only start recording when you say the wake word “OK, Google.” The wake word will also trigger the animated lights on your device. Your request is then sent securely over the cloud.15 Jan 2020

So there's no recording at Google HQ of you and your Mrs snoring, that must be a relief!
The only place I don't now have one is the loo. Security not an issue as even Google wouldn't want to listen into that

Theres definitely no recording of our love making as it either doesn't happen or the 5 seconds isnt enough to activate google !

Google Nest is certainly not dead. I believe Google have over 20% market share (excluding Chinese speakers it's quite a bit more). Alexa is the market leader but Google aren't a small player, while Google love to kill off smaller projects, Home is not one of those.
My lad has an alexa...which is fine....then I got a Google hub as a bedside Alarm clock ...in my opinion the google is better (small touches really...I say to is "goodnight google", it then wishes me goodnight....switches everything off that I've nominated & then plays the sounds of crickets, the display dims & all is well with the wold)

I've now set about automating all my house lights by buying these google minis
Good price but I've gone the Alexa route, I have a friend called Alexey which gets confusing whenever I mention him.

Gotta go, just noticed there's a bloke standing silently in the corner of the room

You’re misleading people on purpose. The device listens for the wake word offline, it only sends data after the wake word.
