Why would you want one of these. It's creepy, it's weird, it's lazy.

Deal isn't for you then. Move along.
pasgun17 m ago

You still haven't given me a reason why anybody needs this though.

Why do you need a smart phone? A computer? A car? Last time I checked the old phone box down the road works just fine, my dusty typewriter in the garage would work if I found some ribbon for it, and I can walk perfectly fine! So why do you need one - short answer is you don't.

But wanting one is a different matter. It provides you with the ability to get information such as your calendar, weather, news quickly, it can play music, control your smart home devices (if you own any) and so much more. If you are happy without one then that's ok - but I use mine every day for some random tasks, it just makes simple tasks that much more simple

Bit like @deeky

Used correctly, the google devices can really free up, valuable, personal & family time and are well worth having!

Fab spot @goonertillidie and the lowest price for this model so far, which when coupled up with the google home max or variants, is a wonderful smart audio learning addition to any property!

Sorely tempted to grab another at this price

Can't all those things be done with your phone which most people have at all times. kk
I had one, returned it and later bought the Mini and also owned the Alexa Show, all a gimmick, as in whats the weather, Google is more advanced, but unless you are linking in Smart devices (i.e. lights, switches, heating, cameras) they are a gimmick.

Note the best use i found for the Google device is to make calls, handy when in the house or for kids to use, but it cannot recieve calls.

Why does anyone need to justify why they ‘need’ anything. Surely the word these days is ‘want’.

Regardless I have echo dots all around the house to play music, automate things like lights, kettle, TV.

My phone isn't always listening, I have to press a button to trigger it. That makes a big difference. It means the phone has to be on my person and I have to have my hands free once at the start to trigger the assistant then again at the end to turn the screen off. Sounds like a small thing but "always listening" is a big part of the convenience of these devices. It means I can call up the assistant while I'm using oven mitts, or while my phone's on my desk, or when I'm getting ready in the morning.

I used to be like you, I thought a phone sat on a charger all day and set to be always listening could do what a google home can do so I tried it out. It turns out a phone can't hear you from across the room that well, let alone the next room over.

You weren't like me, I don't find it too much effort to turn a light on or the heating up. It's fine if you don't care about your privacy. I refer to my original point when I said this is CREEPY. You've just said yourself that you phone is not always listening whereas this device is. Nobody knows who can hack into these things or what it can do without you specifically telling it to. This is an voluntary invasion of privacy at the highest level. Next step is hiring a guy to do things for you. If you don't mind any of this then go ahead.

If only I could remember... or be bothered to go and look
I love this. The only thing which I would love in them is some battery so it does not depend on wires
These look really nice but you could get approx 3 minis for the same price if you shop around, and get 3x the coverage. Is it worth the extra money?

Your comment was "I can do all this stuff with my phone".

It is creepy and so long as you're aware of the risks it's probably fine. Remember though that if you're hell-bent on privacy you'll need to go to extreme lengths like not storing your money in a bank (they've been selling your purchase history to the highest bidder for decades now) so the odds of converting anyone to such an inconvenient lifestyle are slim. All you can do is be aware.

So it does exactly what a phone does, but you pay Google/Amazon/Apple another £100 for a product they've convinced us all we need.

Nice one 👌

Some people on this thread seem to be confusing the words 'need' and 'want'. I don't think you will find many people who believe you need a smart speaker. But you will find many people who want one. If it is a product that interests you and you have a passion for technology like many of us do I would suggest you try one out before jumping to conclusions. If you just want to buy stuff because 'it works', that's a perfectly valid view point, smart speakers just aren't for you, nor is most modern technology :D.

I could argue that a phone does exactly what a tablet does, that does exactly what a computer does and vice versa all day to a degree of similarity - but hopefully you already understand my point. My original issue with the comment "Why would you want one of these. It's creepy, it's weird, it's lazy." Is that it is nothing to do with the deal. It is an uneducated and frankly illiterate attempt at making a criticism of a product they clearly haven't even tried. Sure I have no issue with someone criticising a product they have tried/owned, that is exactly the type of comments wanted! But irrelevant remarks posted as genuine comments are a waste of everyones time... including my own time for writing this response

I agree, I didn't need my two Google Home's but I wanted them! They are great devices to have, with a phone it won't be able to wake up from the other side of the room!
