Google Maps GO - much faster for all devices - less than 1mb

I have a Moto G4 and the standard version for Google Maps has always been a bit rubbish

This new version 137kb - for basic phones etc - is far quicker for bus times etc, it is only a weblink app really but still has all my saved places

It also allows to delete the full version of Maps which gives you back more storage

Give it a try if you have been frustrated by the usual Maps app

Waze goodbye to Google maps.

I really want to like Waze, I even mapped some of my local area when they were still getting setup, but I keep going back to Google Maps. The roads, roundabouts and turns are mapped properly in Maps, the ETA times are always more accurate and it gets me around traffic jams better. The community part of Waze is good but as Google bought Waze years ago I wish they'd bring the 2 things together.
There are actually many "Go" version of traditional Google apps:
  • Files Go
  • Gmail Go
  • Google Go
  • YouTube Go
  • Google Maps Go
  • Google Assistant Go
  • Google Play
  • Gboard
  • Chrome

Waze goodbye to Google maps.

Waze is Sat Nav though isn't it . I never really liked Waze rather use Google Maps when SatNavving

Doesn't give bus times etc

Plus it's 56mb ... The idea of Maps Go is to save space or your phone! Its less than 1mb

Do you get the bus ever? Google maps is good for bus timetables

Do you ever want to find places on foot? Marking them on a map and then walking there?

Waze is for drivers... Which I am as well but they both have different functionality
Yep Waze is amazing, only negative thing is taking the risk of touching your phone to suggest traffic/cops etc for other users whilst driving. I guess as a passenger this works but for people who commute by themselves like me in early hours, theres fewer notifications of traffic etc and difficult for me to add them without being worried of cops

The problem with Waze is that it doesn't do offline maps unlike Google maps. That's a showstopper for me. MapFactor GPS Navigation I find to be one of the best.

Waze is the best if you know where you are going. It's an interactive social media route guide. If you don't know where you are going then Google maps is the best sat nav and dose pull information from waze feed so I heard. Google will show accident and traffic problems from the drivers that report on waze. Worth having both installed and see which you like best

Great Waze chat on here!

Point of my post is to save space on people's phones

All depends what you use Google maps for
It's interesting to see this Waze vs. Google maps discussion. Especially knowing the Waze is entirely owned by Google.

Returning to original topic - Google Maps GO can be faster, but keep in mind it's for a price: no offline navigation, some other functions missing too.

Yep!

I look forward to trying out an Android Oreo 8.1 Go device

Nokia 1 being the main one I guess. Alcatel 1X will be cheap and probably a bit nasty!
I don't like waze or Google maps because they still don't offer up to date camera locations like tomtom.

Waze goodbye to Google maps.

Google bought waze 4 years ago.
Waze can be a pain as it doesn't say if the crazy route with loads of turns it's suggesting is going to save you 20 minutes due to a bad jam, or just 1 minute.
Sure these apps are for devices with 1GB of RAM and fewer.

I've got to say I agree with this - I've given the android auto versions of both a good shot, but Google maps is consistently better at picking better routes and re-routing me faster.

If only it had the speedcams....
Do either do SatNav for caravan towers.
I like Waze but it's full of ads and other such notifications these days so you have to take your hands off the wheel and touch the screen to dismiss them. This means you risk being pulled over by the police
They did a comparison on the gadget show of various phone sat navs including Google Maps and Waze and apparently Waze feeds off Google maps data. However, I still seem to find Google maps easier to use.
Can't stand Waze!
damn, it's 2.99 on IOS

Waze is rubbish compared to Google Maps.

I thought that until I retried it recently.
Mind you, Waze has speed limits - unlike Google Maps !!

Waze goodbye to Google maps.

I think Google own Waze?

That's what a guy at work told me
I find Waze to be the best. Once it showed me a shortcut which had me drive through someone's living room.

All good apart from their overly optimistic predictions to make people think they give the fastest routes when they actually don't.

Na, I just like it. All nav apps have floors this one reminds me clearly of speed, cameras ect.

You can install TomTom speed cameras which will overlay nicely with Google maps!.

What do you want camera location for. Don't speed. Simple.. Although I must admit I've got away with it up until now. Just take it steady. Alerts take your attention away from the road. Well they do with me. I thought Tom tom offer a free speed camera app that runs in back ground anyway? Can't be bothered to check that information

Yes it points you towards lands end and tells you to keep going
Google maps Go requires Google Chrome to work. I like the idea but I don't need chrome.

When it's stand-alone then I'll have another Go.

Useless for walking, biking or public transport, so no.
