Not bad for that camera, still a little much, take another 50 off and that'll be perfick

The XL has had a reduction of £50 too, £419 for that.

Great first deal op

I know this will probably catch some flak, but remember that if you are a student with a student beans account you can get a further 10% off.

The price is then £314.10, not quite £300 but it was enough for me to jump. Good find OP.

It's very good OP, but like Switch says take off another £50 and it'll reign supreme over mid-range
I sold my S9 to buy a Pixel 3A XL. The camera alone makes up for any shortfalls. Love it.
Might be a great camera, but only 4GB RAM kills it for me. My One Plus 3 from 2016 has more RAM. Like others have rightly said, this is a £300 phone.

4gb is enough for stock android.

Not flack, that's good information, and £314 is better

When you fire up the Camera on the Pixel phones, there processing etc takes so much RAM it means other things are force closed in the background. For me personally, I like to keep 8 Chrome Tabs of Fantasy Premier League open at all times. Another instance where 4GB RAM isn't enough.
Great camera phone... Best I've used.. Minimum 1% Quidco upto £20 potentially

8 tabs of Premier League! You definitely enjoy life

Yeah Google the most iPhonish brand of Android does under-spec too a bit, selling on strength of user experience, software (magic GCam included) and after-sales support (sounds familiar?)

However, they've realised they need to up their specs game and Pixel 4 will get a boost, and a lot of advanced tech this year (we love sensors & cams - bye bye RNN, for @bitcoin5 's great pleasure, and many others)

Thats right xavier, it's all about that Fantasy Premier League stress on a Saturday afternoon!

For me, the last Google devices with specs that were good enough were the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2013. How many years did it take Apple to release an iphone with 2GB RAM?

They're still going strong...(my dad has SE)

Yes, I'm forced to use an SE as my work phone. Lack of RAM means it always has to refresh tabs when I leave and re-enter chrome. What a joke.

Even Androids with 8GB RAM do that, questionable memory management (looking at you Huawei-Honor)
You can get a Grade A (boxed, 2 year warranty) from CEX for £260, XL for £270. Only useful if you're on EE though as it's locked to them. That's what I did.

True xavier. That's probably the reason there battery life is so much ahead of the competition. I bought the Mrs a Honor 6X and M3 8.4. Even after 2 years of intense use, she can still get 8 hours of screen on time.

I think this model is fine with 4GB because it's aimed at mid-range, where that is current Android standard.

What's not right is Pixel 3 line, on premium pricing territory, sporting only that

Agreed xavier, particularly with respect to the premium Pixel 3. The problem I have with the 3a is used phones from One Plus rocking 6 or 8GB of RAM. If you can forgo the amazing camera on the 3a, everything else will be so much better on the One Plus. You can have an A grade OP6 unlocked for £295 from CeX as an example.
I've just noticed that the 3a is also priced at £349 (and the 3a XL at £419) on the Google Store if you prefer to purchase it direct from Google.

Well I guess it depends on what kind of user you are, if productivity/performance is paramount then 1+ is great on a budget, if camera is your thing then Pixel; Huawei can juggle both at high end, or give 1+ a run for its money in upper midrange (Honor View 20 incredible value, 10/Play same thing but obviously a rung lower)

Camera excellence doesn't come as standard in mid-range, until 3a made stellar appearance. Even premium models like (1st from brand) 1+7 pro struggle to deliver excellent pictures in some challenging scenarios. Same happens to Xperia 1 etc

And you can combine it with any corporate perks to buy gift cards at 8% off. bringing it down to £288.98, not bad I was looking for a replacement to my Essential Phone this might do the trick. Oh and 1% Topcashback.
Whether 4GB is enough depends. I have an S9 with 4GB which admittedly has a more bloated OS but yeah once I have a smartwatch and/or fitness tracker connected with its bits and bobs running, Pokemon Go running, playing some music, with FB Messenger for the Pogo raid group chat, maybe open the camera to take a quick picture and..... oh no, time to wait for Pokemon Go to load up again as it just got kicked out of memory by the camera.

Add a second game like Ingress or a second Pogo account and yeah forget it. Need 6GB+ for this kind of usage, I'd say. Pixels are looking tempting as I know it's a lighter OS and more importantly not a downgrade in camera, but I've heard they're VERY aggressive at kicking apps out of memory so don't think it'd help my original problem. Otherwise I'm looking at Oneplus 7, but worried about the camera quality and whether installing the Gcam apk is enough to make it not suck.

Thinking about what @Masteryates said above, I've revised my opinion regarding regular RAM for Pixel 3a line, I now think Google should have included 6GB.

Changed my mind because I shuffled my SIM to my Motorola Z2 Force, a 2017 flagship that already came with 6GB. If 2-year old flagships sport that amount of memory, mid-rangers especially those nearer £400 should've caught up in 2019, as many Chinese have indeed, even last year (Pocophone etc) and Samsung's A series this year

So Master Yates is indeed right, Google still has this Applesque instinct of being stingy with hardware, feeling bloated with the superiority their software gives them.

Thankfully for the market, underdogs are making sure those attitudes are no longer valid.
