Google Play Family Library - share your Google Play purchases with other family members

(I first put this is freebies, but realised you'd have to purchase the apps in the first place in order to share them, so reposted it here - could a mod delete the 'freebies' post please?)

I just found this whilst wandering around Google Play - "You can purchase and share apps, games, movies, TV shows, and books from Google Play with up to 5 family members with Google Play Family Library."

Nice if several people in the same 'family' want the same app or movie! It seems you can share as little or as much of your content as you wish - so if something in your own Library of apps or films etc.is not suitable to share you don't have to do so

I haven't signed up to it yet, but thought it could be very useful to other HUKD members............

PS - You have to share a credit card for purchases with the other family members - but you could use a prepaid credit card and put a very limited amount on it if you were worried.......

Great stuff, thanks
Good luck with the prepaid card idea - tried this with my Optimum and Pockit MasterCards, both in date and with balances, but Google Play just rejected them both as invalid. Not happy to share my account with my regular debit card, so this isn't a starter for me.

That's odd - my account has always been linked to a Kalixa pre-paid card, and as that company has now folded I have just today updated my account to use a Pockit card which I got this week. I haven't made a purchase on it yet, but Google certainly allowed me to enter it as my current payment method.......
i have loaded up my account with google credits i loaded up from the supermarket.

will that do?
I saw it wants a credit card for Family. Did anyone try on a browser instead of app and see Paypal if that can be used instead?
I cant seem to setup Paypal for Google Play purchases at the moment.
Fine, but not if you use a Google Apps account unfortunately!

I've got £10 reward credit on my Mums account but as I'm the main user it took £5.99 for Jungle Book off my card! Bit annoying.... Need a workaround
Couldn't get refund either!

Watch out!

google apps works fine for sharing.. i have a home@mydomain.user that i use to purchase apps with, and add this user to every device just for play store access. all my apps are then installed without issue through that account. works for apps and games, never tries movies/books

yes it was such a long sentence people nearly died out of breath ,,,,,,,
I've just linked my partners account with mine via the Family Library, and of the many, many, apps on my account only 19 are showing as available in the Family Library - and the one app of theirs I wanted is not available to me!

However, as far as I can see all of my movies and TV shows are available to them.

Only about 10% of the apps I have previously purchased have become avalable in the Family Library to the others, but I think all my films and TV are available. You DO need a credit card in order to set the Library up, but can still opt to make purchases with your Google Play Balance when you come to buy something.

I *think* you'd have to make the purchase actually using your Mum's account, choosing the Google Play Credit as the payment method, and then add the movie to the Family Library to have it available to any other Library members.

I haven't tried myself yet as there's nothing I want to buy atm!

Same old story! I cancelled Play Music and moved to Spotify Family for the same reason.

Seems to be limited on what you can share. Some of the games I've bought over the years won't share, some will. So its a little hit and miss at the minute.

I've just got my partner to purchase an app (coincidentally with with the Family Library logo) on their account - the payment method automatically came up as Google Play Credit. We checked and the Family Library Payment option (my credit card) was available, but we chose Play Credit and that's how it went through. The app is now available to me as well. So this does work for apps.......
Just wondering why people are using pre-paid cards for the Google Play?

I just buy a Google Play voucher from a supermarket (or somewhere) and then top my Google Play up every so often, so I don't even have to give Google any card number.

Good deal although I've set my children's tablets up with my Google account anyway (although they cannot install anything from their child restricted login anyway, let alone make purchases.

Yeah I just worked it out actually.... Drop down option gives you the Google credit option. Used it for Alice in Wonderland.... Synced to my account and was able to watch through my YouTube account

I don't use a prepaid card, but wouldn't use any kind of topup on my Google account. It means they've got my money before I'm ready to spend it. I'd rather have it in my account until I decide to do that!
Can you do it with music?

Can you do it with music?

Yes, you can also choose which stuff you want to share
Much appreciated... A drop more heat!

Just tried it.
No, you cannot share purchased music.

edit: you can buy a Spotify-style sharing plan for streaming music £9.99/month 1 person, £14.99 for Family sharing (up to 6 people)

However, just to confirm - no, music I've bought on Google Music is not available to other family members

oh, ya know.. buy the google play music family subscription.
Very odd from Google. It's **** hard to find the list of apps you've added to the Family Library. Haven't been able to dig it up.
what happens to rewards credit?
So me and my wife have separate rewards credits what happens to that?

I already subscribe to Spotify so I'm giving GPM a miss for the time being. Thinking about paying another fiver a month for Spotify Family sharing though

You can't share with family? Anyway, you don't need to share card details, just the apps you bought.
so anyone that buys anything on their account can be shared with the 'family members' in the group? (not music as that has been mentioned you can't)
could be perfect for me. ive got several gmail accounts so atleast i can now have them as a 'family' and have the content i have available on each to be watched/used by any of the accounts without signing in/out of each account.

anyone got a direct link to sign up by any chance?
All apps purchased since 2nd July are shared. Prior to that purchases are shared subject to the developers' choice. All future purchases are shared.
You seem to be able to change the family payment method to play credit once you've set it up. It needed to be a card to add members, but otherwise it seemed happy.

Have not yet had a chance to play around and see how it looks from other accounts but if you go to account it's the third option along on the first big grey box (web version). "Change family payment method" is what you're looking for.

My 9 year old is 29. Don't they grow up fast these days?

Got the same message. Sucks.

I really don't like how it won't let you join without adding a family payment method but I thought I'd give it a try if I could limit who could use that payment method. However, you can't stop people over 18 on your family list from buying apps with your card. How on Earth can the person holding the family account be "responsible" for these purchases when they can't fully limit them?!

I've tried to change the family payment method to Google Play credit but the system won't allow it (Perhaps some people have their credit linked to a card?) and after closing the family account it won't let me remove the card from my account.

I see what Google are doing could be very good but very disappointed about how their going about it.

I just use the top up so Google have not got my bank card details and also if it does ever get hacked or the kids manage to crack my password (even though it's very complex) then all that I loose is less than £20).
