Google Play UK now upgrading your movie library to 4K for free

This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

After the US got the free 4K upgrades last month, Google Play Movies in the UK is now upgrading films to 4K, even from some SD films in your library.

So free 4K versions for the price of an SD or HD movie. Seems to be working for those who linked to Movies Anywhere first, but I'm expecting it to gradually roll out to everyone.

So far I've only had 9 films, mostly WB and Dreamworks films, but it's pretty good.

Movies in my library upgraded:
Batman Ninja
Gotham By Gaslight
Harley Quinn
Despicable Me 3
IT (2018)
Kong: Skull Island
Spider-man Homecoming
Death of Superman
The Secret Life of Pets

How is this a deal?

Free 4K movies if you buy, or already bought SD or HD movies seems like a deal to me.

Pointless, with our 4G mobile networks. We need 5G.

You need to log in with an Android tablet to Google Play Movies app and it will tell you in your library, even has a filter for 4K films and 4K upgrades now.
Just bought the Matrix trilogy on Friday hoping this might happen as I hear the upgrade is fantastic.
I have loads of films on Google play... the only one showing as 4k though is the one that I bought in 4k. None of the others come up as the 4k version when I filter.

Same for me but it'll happen.

Thank you
What if I bought a pile of SD movies now? Would these then get upgraded soon?
This is news rather than a deal

Watch movies you’ve already bought in 4KSome SD and HD movies that you’ve already bought or redeemed might be upgraded to 4K. To be updated to 4K, movies must be:

  • Bought or redeemed from Google Play or YouTube.
    • Only SD movies bought or redeemed before October 23, 2018 will be upgraded.
  • From Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony (US only), or Warner Bros.
  • Available in 4K, in your location.
Note: Upgraded Family Library purchases can be shared at 4K quality.

Find movies upgraded to 4K in your libraryYou’ll only be able to do these steps if you have movies that have been upgraded to 4K and if you have the latest version of the Google Play Movies & TV app. Learn how to upgrade your app.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Movies & TV app .Tap Library. At the top, tap Upgraded to 4K.The upgraded movie will automatically play in the highest quality available for your device.

My 4G network (EE) runs faster than my home Fibre!

Yeah, my 4g+ on EE pulls in 180meg download speeds most of the time

mine too. 81.6Mbits on vodafone 4G and 75Mbit on vodafone VDSL "fibre". best part is upload is 30Mbit+ on 4G whereas on VDSL it's 20 and I get 17.

4G has sufficient bandwidth to stream 4K.
Also many users stream their media via 4K TV/Chromecast.

5G won't help nothing of providers won't upgrade their internet connection to signal masts / won't put more of them around
I bought the DC 25 movie collection a while ago for £3 but was only SD. Will these get upgraded to HD or 4K?

Speak for yourself mate, my 4G down speed is as good as my home fibre (about 50mbps) and my up speeds are even better than at home.

Pointless watching 4K films on a titchy phone screen anyway, you wouldn't see any of the extra detail, imagine it's more for home use where you would (hopefully) have something faster than mobile Internet...

5G will need masts on every street pretty much or at least one per "block". At least, that's the current thinking. It will need to operate a lot closer to the user for the sorts of bandwidths they want to provide. But yeah, makes zero sense if you haven't got the backhaul to support it.

Maybe.
I have Despicable Me 3 on my Play Account, which I bought through Play at standard HD and it's not been upgraded to 4K...I wonder why you have the "Upgraded to 4K" sign? Is that Google account a US one by any change @pb-live ?
I've got over 250 movies and do not even get a 4K tab or Upgraded to 4k option to filter by on my android tablet or mobile.
I wondered if the device has to be able to play 4k maybe.
“4K” with a bitrate lower than 1080p Blu-ray.

Still it’s for nowt so heat.

Nope, UK address on the account, goes to UK play store with £ signs, so it might be just that it's rolling out slowly. My other UK account (business one) hasn't had the upgrade yet, either.
Ive got 300+ on Google Play after I linked Movies Anywhere!
Very pleased with this upgrade 😃

Thanks! I guess it's just a roll out thing then!
Ok so none of my 40 movies have been upgraded, looks like I wasn't invited to the party.
None of mine are showing as 4k either, they are all HD or SD.
For movies you have in SD that get the upgrade to 4K, will that also make HD available ?
Wondering if the first upgrades are going to those of us that linked our UK account with Movies Anywhere
Ohhhh it's upgraded my movies anywhere collection too!
