GoPro Hero - £88 @ Tesco +Clubcard Boost (£44) + free del to store

Found 2nd Sep 2015
Whilst checking out the world of Action Cam's, ready to get one for mini me's Xmas present, I spotted this budget GoPro Hero at Tesco for £88.

If memory serves it has been as low as £85 in the past, but as the Delorean has been impounded, £88 is a whole £1 cheaper than Amazon, and thanks to the clubcard boost event, if you have enough points, this could be yours for as little as £44.

Personally I think it's overpriced at ~£90 compared to the competition, though it is a capable Action Camera, and has the all important pedigree and it's certainly worth considering if your looking to move some points along.

Pro's:
1080p30FPS / 720p60FPS
Waterproof housing
Ease of use

Cons:
Built in battery
No in-camera playback

Hot price for a GoPro Hero. Went for the SJCAM SJ4000 wifi personally for around £50, but can see why the Hero appeals to a lot of people.
I've been planning on getting one of these for a trip to the US. Does anyone own one of the competitor cameras? I was worried they'd be cheap knock-offs but if they're good I might go for one of them.

How good is the one your using as I've been after a Go Pro for awhile now but if there is a cheaper alternative that's just as good I would be interested.

I've used a couple, and did favour the Xiaomi yi before seeing this in the boost event. The official SJCAM SJ4000 was prob the best budget action cam for a long time, and is still a worthy piece of kit despite flaws such as fake 60fps claims (it actually just records each frame twice). I'd still recommend one but avoid the fakes (clones of clones) as they can use inferior chipsets I believe - offical ones will be branded sjcam not just sj4000. There's alsoe the SJCAM M10 which is pretty much the 4000 in a cuboid type form factor.

SJ launced the 5000 range this year, and by all accounts it's a bit of a let down so I'd avoid it myself. There's lots of alternatives around, depending on budget, what your needs are and what features / functionality you prioritise.
Ohhh, time to give in and buy one?!

I have three sj4000. 'S as dashcams and they are great, I think hero has no car setting so no good as a dashcam

Useful advice - thanks
I also ordered SJCAM SJ4000 wifi a few days back. I think Gopro are overpriced myself

I have used both GP Hero and a Sj4000. I would go for the SJ as you get a lot more for you money!

GP hero is ok but I hate that the camera is permanently in its polycarbonate housing an the battery is built in.

I've seen to many of these things snap off handle bars and then the hinge is broken...an since you can't replace the case you have to use good old gorilla tape to re attach it.

Good reviews of the 2 cheap alternatives:
SJ4000 (look for SJCAM on the front). Standard and Wifi

I'd concur, if paying anywhere near rrp for the Hero, though the possibility of one for sub £50, ie SJ money, is very tempting. I'm not hearing much about Hero problems in the RC community - and they get knocked about a fair bit, though there's an increasing number of SJ users with issues cropping up as there camera ages - LCD screens (the SJ's killer feature over the Hero) being one I see more and more.
Also worth considering the TCL camera on offer from Amazon £49 with LCD monitor and mic output.

A great little camera that, though I dislike the side mounted lcd ( a necessity due to form factor obv) - iirc it has an ext mic input so would make a good helmet cam I think. Also, despite it's age (getting on a bit now) it has a High bitrate setting so output can be very good.

It's worked well so far, initial colour/light balance is the only downside over the Hero imo and that's easy enough to adjust. The fact it comes with a huge set of mounts etc, the screen on the back, and the ability to stream it via wifi mean I'd probably have gotten it over the Hero even if they were the same price. Given that the SJ4000 wifi is more like £50 it was an easy choice. Just make sure you take a few mins to read up on how to spot fakes because there's plenty of knock off ones out there.

*Above is based on my experience using it diving, flying, mounted on a drone, and just generally messing about.
I use a Mobius as a dash cam - mobius-actioncam.com/
Very small and discreet, records at either 1080 - 30 fps or 720 - 60 fps, same as above,
settings are fantastic, but maybe a little complex to a novice.
theres no way i'd pay that price for a go pro, as others have said, they are a tad expensive for what they are.
My Mobius is fit and forget, turn ignition on, and it starts to record, when memory card is full, it will write over the oldest file.
and i forgot to mention, price is around £42, but buy from authorised dealer, as i believe there are lots of cloned cams knocking about on Ebay etc.

Mobius makes a nice dash cam, and useful for some drone uses too - though for @£50 I think an action cam has more possibilities. Couldn't agree more re price if paying ~£90 for a Hero.
If you didn`t buy one at the normal price then you don`t need one
When choosing your action cam battery life may be a consideration.
The Hero has up to 2 hours 30 minutes on continuous record.
You can use a powercell backup power source to charge on the fly but that's not always possible/convenient.
I bought an SJ4000 from Fleabay with two extra batteries and more accessories than the GoPro for £52.99
eBay SJ4000
I used it a few weeks ago in Egypt. Attached it to the front of a quad bike driving through the desert and used it snorkelling. All good and very pleased with results.

Good price but you run the risk (even if it is only slight) of incurring customs charges...
I went for the Yi camera for £60, has better specs. Only took 10 days to deliver from China.
Hot. Bought for £3 after using all my Tesco clubcard vouchers. Think that's a pretty hot deal (unless someone knows how I could've used my club card vouchers to buy these Chinese rip offs??!) Forgot to say I had an SJ. Build quality is not good. Lasted 7 months then things started to fall apart....

Buy using a credit card to pay, buy from someone who despatches from the UK (or even better is fulfilled by Amazon), and buy from someone who has lots of good feedback.

It won't guarantee it's genuine, but it very likely will be; and spotting fakes isn't too hard so getting a refund or replacement in the above circumstances isn't difficult.
Great price for a name brand- heat added!

The SJ4000 is pretty rubbish now, the Yi is about the same price does proper 60fps and runs a Sony sensor.

It's a great camera. I got it roughly around the time it had released. Was £56 with a few quid post.
Xiaomi Yi any time before this got mine for 46£ from banggood.com now sports 2k video and up to 240fps on lowest resolution. great lil camera only down side is that it does not with come accessories and some available on market are not up to scratch.

assuming you have a clubcard then Tesco should periodically send you vouchers to either spend back in store or to redeem online for reward vouchers. In this case you can redeem £40 of vouchers for £80 to spend on certain departments.
This is quite a poor choice compared to the xiaomi Yi.

Same here £60 quid and no need to buy any other fittings although I'm still a bit worried it's a good fake but I did the checks and it looks ok.
For a second I thought it was a deal on a gopro,I soon realised it was actually a sj4000 and yi cam deal in disguise
where does it say £44 pounds worth of club points at checkout!?
