If you are a member of a library then you can access Freegal the free music service. I get unlimited free music streaming and can download and keep 5 tracks from whichever albums I want every week.
The link takes you to the generic site, where for some reason you have to select Scotland as there's no 'England' option (that's Americans for you!!). You may be better going to the website for your own local library and search for Freegal from there. That's how I first discovered it.

Loads of artists both old and new ..Some of the artists on there include:
Meghan Trainor
Leonard Cohen
Bob Dylan
Olly Murs
Kodaline
Sia
OMI
Paloma Faith
Foo Fighters
John Legend
Kasabian

They also have soundtracks including Empire and Sons of Anarchy.

I've managed to build up quite a nice music collection for free and legal!

this will come in handy, many thanks

Looks good but the IOS app only works with two library's.
Tower Hamlets & Portsmouth
I'll keep an eye on it as they add library's
Unless somebody knows a way around it.

Unfortunately for me there are no libraries in Wales included in this scheme. I have family in Aberdeen and it looks like the libraries up there are subscribed.

The apps are a bit disappointing but the website is much better!

Anyone know the format of a Tower Hamlets library card?

I had to click Scotland but my local library came up - just need to renew my card now!

That's weird. Can't click to England. Clicking on Scotland brings up a small, random list of English/Scottish libraries. Weird.

Much better now!
Last question - where do you select Scotland?
I've only found Login page, and there is no Country field, only Zipcode/State.

It's the last option on the list ... country.
I would google your county and freegal to see if you can access it from your library website if possible. I think Freegal itself was a US based idea but it's been adopted by a lot of the libraries in this country. I also notice that some counties have better selections of music than others.

England got conquered by the Scots,so is part of Scotland now.:D

It'll all have been said before on previous posts about this, but the search facility on the app is woeful and I don't recall an update on the app since I downloaded it many months ago, which shows what level of support there is.

The music I believe is related to Sony labels, hence the rather selective list of artists available (although there are some quality gems if you are into archive stuff and get lucky with the search).

Those using this legitimately rather than simply putting random library numbers* are likely to find that their local library only subscribes to 3 downloads a week (the only one of the libraries I joined that had more than that was Southampton - none of the London libraries do more than 3).

* I'm perplexed as to why someone would bother to use this illegally by using a random library number. Seriously, if you are not going to be legal, you may as well just download songs (infinitely wider selection and easier to search for!) from the usual illegal means, which also has the benefit of the library service you are exploiting not having to pay for your illegally gained Freegal downloads!

Most libraries offer free digital magazines too. See their website for details and follow any links to e-magazines.

thanks, haven't been to library in years so hadn't heard about this. Still had card in drawer from years ago, hasn't expired so was able to log in.

You're welcome ... I've used the Suffolk library site for music and ebooks for a year or more now without any problems. I've just installed the Android app on my tablet and Apple app on my ipod touch so that I can listen to it when I'm out and about!

ill have a look when i have my library card cheers

The website is not for all the UK, It's for Ireland and Scotland only. Im in England so can't use it, hopefully I will be able to use it in the future as it seems to be a very good service from what I've seen so far.

There are some English libraries under Scotland! You can also try entering your county direct. My county wasn't shown but was recognised when I typed it in.

Thanks, I'm in Essex but can join through Suffolk as you can get a library card if you are in an adjoining county!
