Show us a better deal then.............

This feels like a silly question, but with no details I thought I'd ask ... as the box has HDMI output, does that mean it will decode the HD Freeview channels when they are available? Sadly that's 2011 for our region by all accounts :x

When freeview releases any HD channels we will all need new Set top boxes to cope, so no it wont be able to cope with HD

"Viewers who want to watch the new services will have to buy a new set-top box compatible with the as-yet incomplete DVB-T2 standard, and with MPEG-4. The transmission and encoding upgrades will allow broadcasters to squeeze higher bitrates into the same Freeview spectrum"

No it won't. No boxes currently available will work with HD freeview.

Thanks clondikemike and callum9999. So is the HDMI port really just a marketing benefit?

Well on the basis you have a HD Ready TV but without a Freeview DBV tuner it it, you can either

a) External Freeview box takes digital DVB -> converts to analog -> SCART into TV - > Redigitizes -> Scales to TV & displays

b) External Freeview HDMI box takes digital DVB - > scales it digitally -> HDMI into TV -> displays

The latter SHOULD be better, but will depend on the quality of the scaling chips in the Freeview box -v- the TV, and also the Scart cable/interface quality. The Freeview box chips are likely to be later generation (as a Freeview'less HD Ready set is likely to be a bit antique) so likely to be doing a better job. As the Freeview HDMI box likely also has a SCART analogue output you can actually try both solution and see which YOU visually prefer with YOUR kit = best of both worlds.

I took a 'Grundig' dvd player apart and found it was rebranded 'digihome'.
So don't rely on the grundig brand as any sign of quality - like many quality brands of the past they have sold out.

One is £29.99 and the other £34.29. I didn't include delivery costs as most people have easy access to an Argos.

I wasn't claiming massive savings, I was just backing up the person who said that this isn't especially cheap. (It doesn't appear its possible to get the box at £30 at Asda as you have to pay the delivery).

Boom, good answer! Thanks for that, was forgetting that Freeview is of course digital to start with ... my simple mind was thinking that a standard def picture couldn't benefit from going across an HDMI cable.
