You could spend a bit more and get a carbon Planet X bike

Price is good but personally wouldn't touch a bike with mechanical disc brakes...not safe in poor weather conditions in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with them as long as they are set up correctly. There as good as rim brakes.

xs size only: (

meh, think il stick with my 2003 LooK KX Light,
probably not worth much more than £200 these days but still much better than this bike

To be honest, I don't think it is a cracking deal. It's okay - probably pretty standard. Higher than what I'd pay. The difference between Sora and Claris isn't huge.

Mechanical disc brakes aren't ideal. Either hydraulic discs or rim brakes.

But it would still be £200 more and wouldn't be a CX or adventure road bike. Their alloy equivalents aren't as cheap as this.

Can it take 35mm cx/gravel tyres? Has it got rack/mudguard eyelets? Can you easily upgrade to disc brakes?

There is little point saying X is better than this bike if X doesn't perform the same tasks.

i agree

Can anyone recommend a bike within 500 pounds with a size small frame (51-53cm), road/cx for commuting.

I know several people who've had difficulties with them and found themselves suddenly with non-stopping brakes in wet, nasty conditions. I was on a ride when this happened to a friend. Took a mechanic who was with us a good while to adjust them so they worked. He said he'd seen the same thing on a lot of mechanical discs which easily go out of adjustment and he wouldn't ride a bike with them fitted. Another experienced chap on the same ride said he'd rejected his bike with mechanical discs as, after a week of riding, he considered it unsafe. Both said they'd be happy with hydraulic discs or rim brakes but not mechanical. I've heard the same from several other riders subsequently. My bikes have rim brakes and they always work fine. Just trying to warn folks as , to me, safety is the number one concern in cycling and I wouldn't want to find my brakes (or anyone else's!) failing at the wrong time.

I'd go for this one - absolute bargain at the price £399. Sizes are limited but stores might have other options. Was awarded budget bike of the year and commuter bike of the year 2015-2016. Takes mudguards, panniers, wider tyres. A good first bike that will get you started and keep you going until you decide if you want/need to upgrade at some point in the future.

Sorry can't get link to stick - select and google for details.

If you could stretch your budget to £650 it's big brother the T540 comes with full shimano 105 which is a steal at that price point.
