May be of interest to those who are on a trial subscription to the Times newspapers.

When I called to cancel my three month half-price trial subscription to avoid paying the full price and 12 month minimum contract term, the customer retention team simply offered to extend the deal for another three months at half price with no 12 month contract. I didn't even have to haggle.

To put this in context:

- newsagent price for the Times is £1.20 Mon-Fri and 1.50 Sat (I don't read the Sunday paper), this works out at £7.50 per week or £97.50 over three months
- full subscription price for Mon-Sat is £5.00 per week or £65.00 over three months
- this deal works out at £2.50 per week or £32.50 over three months saving over 60% on the newsagent prices!

Not everyone likes the Times or buys newspapers in this day and age but I hope that this may come in useful to those who may be coming to the end of their subscription trial.

Good prompt. They offered me that earlier this year. Only downside is that they said they only offer that ONCE, ie having had the 3m trial and now the 3m discounted period, that's likely to be their last offer before insisting on full price, and even actually cancelling won't get a counter offer from them.

Do make sure to cancel before the full-price period begins (from memory you have to do it something like at least 2 weeks before) AND watch out for them taking a month's sub anyway. That happened to me and I had to phone to claim a refund. Their excuse was that I cancelled the day the payment run ran!

Not sure how soon one can sign up afresh for a fresh 3m trial. (With the FT you have to wait a year between 1m trials.)

Still find it strange why people pay good money to read yesterdays news ? Good deal if you want to be 24 hours behind

Phoned them to cancel after another 3 months. After a few minutes of chit chat they offered another 3 months at half price on a different subscription (Mon-Fri instead of Mon-Sat) as they couldn't extend the same deal for another 3 months.
