Not the best retailer or the best bike in the world, but i was given a strict budget to adhere to (which I have exceeded by £7.99!) and I think this is good value and fairly lightweight for the money given the Aluminium frame. It also has no gimmicky suspension on it and will be fine for family rides. I'm a keen cyclist so will be servicing this myself before I let my wife ride it given the Halford/Apollo rep.

I know this was never worth £280 and that a £300 Specialized would have been better value in the long run. Hopefully I'll get to say "I told you so" in a year or two!

It really depends what store you go to - I've had good and bad. As I've been after a cheap bike like this for a while I've paid close attention to the bike deals and Halfords usually gets a slating from posters so i thought I'd get that out the way in the OP!

"I know this was never worth £280 and that a £300 Specialized would have been better value in the long run."

To be honest; as it's not one of these stupid full sus bikes for £80, the only things likely to be a bit on the crap side are the brakes & gears and those are easily remedied.

Like you said; no way it's a £280 bike, but given the budget was £100 you were only ever going to pick up a 2nd hand Specialized/GT/Saracen (or similar) for that kind of money; and that's with a huge amount of luck!

This should be a thousand times better than a full sus £80 bike (like they have in Tesco).

If the frame turns out to be half decent you could swap out some components and get a reasonable bike from it.

Yes - as well as the £100 limit it wasn't to be 2nd hand despite my protestations! Something about other people's sweaty bottoms and palms.
